The parade of tall ships from Sail4th 250 reminds us that we can still count on international support and friendships. In order of appearance: the Dutch barkentine Oosterschelde; the US Coast Guard cutter, Eagle; the two-masted topsail schooner Pride of Baltimore II; an FDNY fire ship; the Argentine full-rigged ship, Libertad; the two-masted topsail schooner Lynx; two views of the Chilean four-masted barkentine, Esmeralda; the Dominican Republic's barkentine Juan Bautista Cambiaso; the Colombian training barque Gloria; Germany's training vessel, the barque Gorch Fock, a sistership of the Eagle; India's training ship, the barque Sudarshini; the Italian full–rigged ship, Amerigo Vespucci; Peru's four-masted barque, the Union; the Portuguese barque Sagres, another sistership of the USS Eagle; and the Romanian barque Mircea, yet another sistership of the USS Eagle (all four of these vessels were built by Blohm and Voss shipyards in Germany in 1937 and 1938). Not pictured is the sloop Clearwater, which was removed from the parade down at the Narrows due to displaying a message in support of the Clean Water Act and indigenous rights, an ironic turn of events. The last shot from @kava63 is a Boeing Superfortress, the second time I've seen this particular B-29, nicknamed "Doc." taken in Hudson River by @jnobianchi

If you've seen the musical South Pacific, you have a passing familiarity with the nation of Vanuatu, which is where James Mitchner set his "Tales of the South Pacific." When you're in the middle of a longer race, your morale can flag. It's a mental game, and the cheers and support of your community get you through. Thank you, @definenewyorkrunclub for the fire and commitment to being there for your runners. Thank you @thatcoffeyboy for your dedication and unmatched leadership, and thank you, @justrunjulia for your wisdom and guidance. It was hot, but I felt great and in control. I knew I was in the right spot when I saw you, @victorpictureee and I knew I was going to finish when I saw you, @imnotsleepingimasian - Thank you, Define family!!

A year ago, I ran the London Marathon. It was hot, in the 70s. Like many runners, I hit the wall, but not at mile 20; it happened to me at mile 12. When you're young or inexperienced, you think your will is enough to overcome any challenge. Experience teaches us otherwise. The only thing that got me through that day was help and fellowship from my friends, including @kava63 @rlgdalton @vybezwithtreb @dawnypap @justrunjulia and two staunch friends I didn't even know I had until I met them: @parkypablo and @manda_palmer . The three of us ran for @parkinsonsuk . Like that guy says: this is about running. This not about running. Read the story through the Substack link in my bio.

Today's #nokings protest started at Columbus Circle and worked its way down to 34th Street. I couldn't tell you how many showed up, but I saw tens of thousands in @kava63 and my little section and when we got to the dispersal point at 34th, the parade continued for another hour plus and showed no signs of slacking when we left. It was a perfect "NYC is a small town" moment running into you, @pamperin89 !!

Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate! Led by our own @victorpictureee the crew at @definenewyorkrunclub ran from @dickandjanes in Fort Greene over the Manhattan Bridge to Chinatown for Super Saturday yesterday. After stops at one of my favorite bookstores, Yu & Me Books, and @mealsforunity - some of us ran back across the bridge. A GREAT morning!
