We needed Dad.

Let me explain:

When you know your first baby will more than likely also be your last, there’s this strange way you experience motherhood. You’re living it, but somehow you’re also watching it happen—like a movie you already know you’ll wish you could rewind.

So you try to stay present. You try to memorize the weight of her in your arms, the sound of her little voice, even the routines that leave you bone-tired—the same bath, the same books, the same bedtime song—because you know that one day, you’ll ache for the very moments you once wished would hurry up and end.

And no matter how exhausted, overstimulated, touched out, or emotionally drained I was, there wasn’t a single part of her day I didn’t want to be 100% a part of.

Bedtime included.

Because when you know you may only get to do this once, even the hard parts feel impossible to give away.

Maybe I was in denial. Maybe it was the pressure of an upcoming trip forcing me to finally admit it. But either way, we needed a change.

I needed help.

Cue Dad.

I’m not a stranger to the idea that involving Dad at bedtime can help. He’s put her down before—once, in Dublin—and, ironically, it was one of the best nights of sleep she’s ever had.

So last night, we experimented.

Peter did bath time, books, and the entire wind-down with her. Just the two of them.

When it was time for me to come in and nurse her to sleep, for the first time since she was tiny, he didn’t leave.

And it wasn’t some magical, overnight fix.

She didn’t fall asleep immediately. She didn’t sleep completely through the night. But she was noticeably calmer. There was less back-and-forth, less switching boobs, less grabbing for the other one while nursing—which, if you know, you KNOW. 😂

And when she did wake twice, she didn’t sit straight up and cry for me like she normally does.

It was subtle.

But it was different.

And you guys… we barely changed anything.

Tonight, we’ll do it again. And Saturday night, Dad is officially on his own.

But I think the biggest lesson from night one actually had nothing to do with sleep.

Met a fellow Jersey girl who’s lived in Maui since she was a kid, and we immediately loved each other.

Paia is one of my favorite places on the island and I feel like it’s an underutilized backdrop for me. My goal for some of these sessions was to shoot in places I hadn’t before, and this lil surf town being 5 minutes from my family’s house made this a no-brainer.

I love everything we shot and I love that all I needed to send Jo was a couple of inspo images and she totally nailed the styling.

Also, these cigarettes cost me $17.

Your clothes don’t just change how people see you. They can change how you see yourself.

And there’s actually a term for it: enclothed cognition — the idea that what we wear can influence the way we think, feel, and behave.

Seriously, think about it.

You put on the outfit that makes you feel really good and suddenly you stand a little taller. You make more eye contact. You’re more outgoing. You walk into the room differently.

And then those tiny shifts start reinforcing the way you see yourself.

You feel confident → you behave more confidently → people respond to you differently → you have even more reason to feel confident.

That’s how an outfit becomes more than something you wear—it becomes a signal to your brain about who you’re allowed to be.

Which is why, even though most days it’s just me and Esme running errands and working from home, I make it a point to get ready every morning. Not because I need somewhere special to go, but because it sets the tone for the day and reminds me that I’m still a person outside of my to-do list.

Everyone talks about how important it is to get outside postpartum for your mental health, but I think putting on something that makes you feel good can be just as meaningful.

Wear the dress. Put on the boots. Do your hair for absolutely no reason.

Sometimes you don’t wait until you feel like her to start showing up like her.

Sometimes you dress like her first. 🤎

Tried to capture a little bit of our midday reset but mostly just captured more bald spots from #alopeciaareata that I didn’t know existed 😂

Being a new mom is crazy because things I would have really cared about before seem so trivial in the grand scheme of things and I credit the newfound perspective solely on creating another life - something/someone so much bigger than my own problems.

That’s not to say I’m not freaking out while I wait for my dermatologist appointment lol but I’m not going to let it hinder any part of me (including posting this video where bald spots are clearly present) because I have little eyes and ears that see and hear everything I do and my highest priority is making sure she never makes herself feel small, especially when it’s something as irrelevant as your looks 🤘🏽
