Last night I was floating in the pool and staring at the stars when the basketball floated by, and I recalled the afternoon rehearsal day when Duncan first got to town last month. 100 Nashville degrees, and he was moving slowly but he was dressed to the nines with a vest, tie, cap and slacks to rehearse with the teens. Before going back to the hotel after the teens left, he borrowed a bathing suit and we shot a round of HORSE, that’s where he explained “MULTISPORT” to me, he was rather serious about getting this match together with multiple goal point opportunities on the field. He asked to play some Radiohead and I remember he REALLY loved Murray 💜 (and Gus) who got so much hair all over his suit and Duncan didn’t care in the least and hugged him all day, telling him what a good dog he was. As I watch back these phone clips there were so many 5 second slip up giggle moments in this show that were hard and yet so wonderful all night long. taken in The Franklin Theatre by @jo2thabu

I first met and became Duncan Sheik’s concert tour booking agent in 2001(?). Soaring from the Grammy-nominated hit single “Barely Breathing,” Duncan was excited about two new original albums, “Phantom Moon” and “Daylight,” and we worked together for the better part of the decade, through his releases of “White Limousine” and “Whisper House.” The song Half-Life on Daylight is my favorite Duncan song, and one of my favorite shows of my career was booking Duncan at Jazz at Lincoln Center (2005), as we first started hearing some of the songs that would become the life-changing, incredible Broadway musical “Spring Awakening.” I was so proud to see his show sweep the Tony Awards in 2007.

After the success of Spring Awakening, Duncan did not tour venues around the country much, as he became a star of the Broadway community, with celebrated works like “Alice by Heart,” “American Psycho,” and the forthcoming musicals “Nero” and “Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen”. Duncan was the type to prefer a small symphony to use for an “affordable backing band”

Fast forward to 2026. In a unique coincidence, my daughter’s high school produced Duncan’s show “Alice by Heart” in April, and my son starred in a local production of “Spring Awakening” in July. Just two months ago, as Duncan was wildly busy with these four new global projects, and what he even said was a “yacht rock” album he recorded, I asked him if I might fly him in to see Jake in “Spring Awakening” and give a fun pep talk to the kids in “Spring” and that had just done “Alice by Heart,” and to my surprise he said Absolutely, he would love to! I was stunned. Jake’s show happened to be the same weekend as the famous open call audition for the new Broadway version of Spring Awakening, but Duncan chose to spend a few days in Franklin, TN.

I set up a show, just Duncan solo, at The Franklin Theatre, a storyteller-songwriter vibe, which would sadly be his final performance. A week before the show, Duncan threw out a suggestion. He was coming to Franklin alone, was not feeling 100%, could use some instrumentalists, and suggested .. what if he just sang his original album material, not the Broadway pieces. I love exploring different cities these days. Today we started 45 min to the South of Rome, began our trip above Lake Albano, outside the home of Castel Gandolfo. I almost walked in on the Pope having lunch but his guards I guess said I couldn’t, so the we went over to lake NEMI for lunch, an adorable lake city that is all things Strawberries, and we had some delicious treats and we saw the goddess Diana, and a cute couple taking wedding pix, and after a good nap, Kate fell in love with a never ending maze that housed an ancient wine cellar. The last few days brought plenty of curveballs—and a whole lot of creative beauty.

I’m incredibly grateful to Duncan Sheik, who missed the madness of the Spring Awakening NYC open call auditions to honor his commitment to our rising stars in Franklin, TN. When LOLO landed an exciting role with Music City: The Musical, Duncan graciously invited our talented students (and me!) to join him onstage. What was undoubtedly a challenging night for him without his full crew became the memory of a lifetime for these young performers.

Huge thanks to The Franklin Theatre, esp. their outstanding backstage production team for navigating every challenge with kindness and professionalism. And endless appreciation to my brother Rob Burger, who learned an entire catalog in a day via phone-to-ear, and to Abigail Levy, who knocked it out of the park as both star vocalist and musician.

I couldn’t have been more proud of every student who performed—Caroline, Bennett, Carter, Emma, Emma, Laila, Abigail, Jake, of course, and our wonderful dancers, especially Maddie and Lucy for their beautiful choreography. Beyond the performances, they were supportive, pro stagehands and runners too.

Duncan then also visited The Gift of Song’s production of Spring Awakening, which was absolutely phenomenal. He spent time speaking with the casts and left some great advice: keep it tight, it’s only rock & roll, things will go wrong—what matters most is how you handle the moments and the connection you make with your audience.
