The Awakening
Oil on canvas
H60cm x W50cm

I have taken a short break from painting to concentrate on life drawing and now I’m incorporating the figures into the paintings alongside the landscapes and nature. So far the figures are appearing whole but I’m interested to see what happens when you mix the drawing marks of plants and mountains with those of the life drawings. I was particularly impressed when I saw the exhibition of Cecily Brown at the Serpentine in London in the summer.

A beautiful trek in Valle Piola to the top of Monte Farina (1572m) so called because the shepherds used to carry huge sacks of flour there so that they could cook whilst they tended the sheep.
The autumn colour was just starting to show through🍁😍 taken in Monte della Farina m 1572 s.l.m by @jo_aust1n

Fiore della Montagna, H100cm x W70cm

This is the final version of the painting from the Fano Adriano painting day. I have been doing some life drawing sessions by @londondrawinggroup, although online it works really well and the models and teachers especially Lily are excellent. I now have a bank of life drawings to add to my nature drawings and I was excited to combine them as part of my process and see what would emerge. I was really pleased with this unplanned result especially as I had to complete it in one day.

The exhibition is on until Saturday 22nd August from 17:00 to 19:30 at Sala “Luigi Riccioni” of the Officine del Gran Sasso Viale Vittorio Emanuele, Fano Adriano.

Yesterday I had the most amazing, unforgettable experience going up the Corno Grande which at 2912m is the highest peak in the Appenines. Luckily I was with two friends and we went with an excellent group.
Now when I look at the Corno Grande from my lounge in Nereto I can imagine us sitting on the top like eagles drinking coffee and eating ciambellone. A very hard trek and a lot of rock scrambling. In fact I can hardly walk today😂 but so worth it and never to be forgotten!😍 by @jo_aust1n

The painting day at Fano Adriano was fabulous as always. It’s such a beautiful place it’s not surprising that there were even more painters there than last year. taken in Fano Adriano by @jo_aust1n

An amazing day’s trekking from Campo Imperatore to Pizzo Cefalone, 2533m. There were amazing views along the ridge walk and a lot of rock scrabbling to get to the top, a new experience for me!
It was definitely worth it and our wonderful guide Giada even brought fresh ciambellone that her mother had made and made us coffee at the top!😋😍 taken in Pizzo Cefalone by @jo_aust1n

Another fantastic day’s trekking from the majalletta at 1660m to the top of Monte Focalone at 2776m. A rather exhausting 17km hike over 8 hours but absolutely beautiful and mercifully not too hot as we were so high😊 taken in Monte Focalone by @jo_aust1n

Broken Waters, 1mx1m, oil on canvas

This is one of a series of paintings that I have been working on concurrently for my upcoming show at @respirartgallery 27th June to 10th July.
I have spent a long time trying to think of a title and I’m really happy with Broken Waters as it has a creation myth element to it which I feel emerged as the painting developed.
Process is a particularly important aspect of my work. Each painting begins with sketches made from life; but these are only a starting point, intended as a study and a visual record of the lines and forces at work in natural forms and structures. Later, in the studio, these drawings become the seeds for building compositions on canvas. It is not so much the forms actually depicted in the drawings that are transferred to the canvas, but rather the sense of energy and movement they contain. It is not really a linear process, but a continuous feedback loop in which the evolution of the work is guided by the work itself, as it develops its own momentum toward a previously unplanned outcome.
