The supermarket traces your spending habits, your phone knows your face, and ‘privacy’ is just a word that we skim in the terms and conditions. For photographer Jo Duck, the simplest methods to avoid surveillance might also be the most absurd. ⁠

This September, Duck’s photo series, Razzle Dazzle, confronts the creeping reality of facial recognition technology at Finland’s Backlight Photo Festival.⁠

What if the best way to hide is to be impossible to read?

Razzle Dazzle takes its title from a camouflage strategy developed during the First World War. Rather than concealing ships, bold geometric patterns made them difficult to interpret, confusing the information observers could extract.

Drawing on this idea, Jo Duck presents a series of photographic portraits in which people attempt to evade facial recognition through absurd analogue disguises. Using costumes, props and playful interventions, the project responds to growing concerns about surveillance, biometric data and anonymity in public space.

Through comical disguises and deliberately futile analogue methods, Razzle Dazzle explores deeply human responses to a world where surveillance technologies are becoming part of everyday life.

Last year I was commissioned by Powerhouse Parramatta to shoot fifty portraits of people in Western Sydney, looking specifically at their connections to shopping and shopping centres.
The project took me home, which gave my heart a swellin’.
This portrait is the first to be released before the opening of the new Powerhouse museum later this year. It’s of Emilia, Comfort and Vida at My African Beauty Shop in Blacktown.

At first the ladies were suspicious of me and my big camera, but Emilia allowed a few shots, and once she saw she was looking good and that I could do cute lighting, everyone was happy to get in on it.
I love that this portrait has a timelessness to it, like it could be anywhere in the world sometime from 1990 onward. by @jo_duck
