It was 2023. I was in my very early twenties. More than ever, I needed to move, escape, run, but I couldn’t, yet. I had just finished my third year of uni, writing and filming my first short film… what an adventure. It was summer, I had no plans whatsoever, but I needed to do something. I couldn’t spend money, though; I had something planned. So one cloudy yet very hot afternoon, I picked up my camera and walked towards the sea.

No plan, just felt inspired to capture that blue light that comes with the weather and is particularly bright at the beach. The same path, the same walk I had done hundreds of times. See, back in Uruguay, I used to live near the coast, in a very bright city near the capital called “Ciudad de la Costa”. But for some reason, that day the walk felt different.

For me, walking towards the sea meant hope, a place to be alone yet not feel like it. A place to imagine, to read, to think, to write, to cry, to live, and all at peace. But that day, that day, as I got closer to my dear friend, I felt angry, sad, nostalgic for a future I had yet to live, for today.

As soon as I stared at him, I was faced with a wall of those tiny little creatures that break into our home as soon as the heat goes up. They were everywhere; I wasn’t welcome. But there was something so exciting to my broken heart that kept me pushing towards the dunes in hopes of a better spot to see him, to talk to my dear friend. The sea at dusk.

Nothing.

No luck, still had them all around me, wishing more than ever to finally be left alone. So I walked down, angrier than I was before. They took what was mine, my sacred spot, and the willingness to create, to do something. Some might call me crazy, some might even not. But I stayed there for two more years. Until the wall finally came down.

So I left, not to escape but to seek, to question, and to finally stay.
