Celebrating Miriam Fried at 80 🎻

As students, we were inspired by the integrity, rigor, and artistry of Miriam’s playing and teaching. The formidable repertoire I studied with her — from Bach and Biber to Sibelius, Brahms, Bartók, Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven — left an indelible mark on me. After years of performing and teaching, I’m increasingly aware of how certain lessons continue to reveal themselves as we grow. Miriam imparted not simply concepts about violin playing, but a seriousness of purpose, a way of listening, and a deep commitment to serving the music.

To perform Leclair in Jordan Hall with Cathy French, my dear friend and fellow studio mate from our undergraduate years, was pure joy. Endless giggles in rehearsal, just like our student days!

Having Paul Biss listening to our dress rehearsal brought us straight back to our Kuttner Quartet year, when he was our intrepid chamber coach. I’m so grateful to him for the musical invitation and for bringing us all together.

The concert closed with breathtaking footage of Miriam performing the Spohr Concerto for her mentor, Josef Gingold, in 1984. So heartwarming, too, to see Moshi, Kyle, and Ashley continuing their studies at NEC with Miriam and Paul.

Still in awe, Ms. Fried.
Thank you. ❤️

P.S. A special thank you to Chris Reuning for entrusting me with the Rothschild Strad for the evening.

Three of my hearts in NYC—Jeanne, Zoe and Henry. Catching up and hearing about their Juilliard adventures is always a joy. So special to see them finding their paths. 🩵

Zoe Barton: Colburn CSPA –> BM Class of 2029

Jeanne Marquez: Colburn Academy –> BM Class of 2026, MM Class of 2028

Henry Rogers: CIM YAP –> BM Class of 2025, MM Class of 2027

A leisurely stroll through Central Park before heading back to LA. 🌳
