My heart is very full. After Queer Writes ended, I visited the bookstore at the museum and learned that they had sold 17 copies of The Tender Land by Kathleen Finneran. And even better, at our request, they will carry it indefinitely.

We had a beautiful program tonight. So many different kinds of stories. Our readers did a wonderful job and Charis roused and warmed us w song. Thx to Ken Haller, Christopher Conner, Sidney McGhee, Jet McDonald and Molly Pearson and to our Kathleen Finneran tribute readers Mary Jo Bang, Edward McPherson and Jarek Steele

The museum counted 225 people in the audience and thought there might have been more. And the happy hour in the grand hall upstairs w 14 different community tables was packed.

This, on one of the busiest nights in June. With Dining Out for Life, Opera Theatre St Louis, St Louis Shakespeare Festival, Young Liars at the Green Finch, the opening of God of Carnage at the New Jewish Theatre and more all at the same time as us.

I later learned that many of Kathleen’s students were there and two family members which was unexpected and wonderful.

One of the writers said it was kind of me to do this tribute.

I said, “Well, I am kind. But this is not about kindness. It is about love. And also about preserving the legacy of one of the best writers I knew.”

I will love and miss Kathleen always. But I think we did something beautiful tonight. It gave people who knew her a chance to hear her words and and others to meet her.

Thank you to everyone who came and participated. And thank you to everyone who has been texting to say how much they loved Queer Writes this year and ALL of the readers.

Perhaps I make this look seamless. It’s actually months of work and coordination and promotion.

Very grateful to Becky Galambos and Torrey Park for their work and Emily Rowe Underwood, our principal contact at the Missouri History Museum who believes in this program and so much more. by @joanlipkin

Consider this a personal invitation from your Queer Writes crew to join us Thursday June 11 at the Missouri History Museum for song, story and community.

And it’s free.

Happy hour 5-6:30. The program is 6:30-8 pm by @joanlipkin
