The Arding Room’s book club is the best. Great group of people, a great selection of books across the months and last night we had the privilige of the author joining us.

Joanna Glen’s book, The First Act of Summer is a beautiful read. It follows Hester from childhood to 60 and illustrates how guilt and remorse for one bad decision can shape the life you lead. Incredible characters, setting and story.

It was fascinating to hear Joanna’s process for writing her books. I’m onto her next one - All My Mothers. Thanks so much to Kathryn for being such a fab host. by @joannaglenwriter

BARGAIN ALERT. Book, ice cream, beach, go.
The ice cream might be called a 99.
But only the book costs 99p.
For August, on Kindle.
Long hot sandy summers, love, pain, the chance of redemption. Plus beach huts. And a harp. 💛☀️🪉
Also, theories for why a 99 is called a 99, all unproven.
🍦Stefano Arcari ran an ice cream shop at 99 Portobello High Street in Scotland where he cut Cadbury flakes in half to adorn the cones.
🍦An Italian king had an elite royal guard of 99 soldiers so anything top class was called a 99.
🍦The flakes for the ice cream measured 99 mm. by @joannaglenwriter

📚 🌊 Book Review: The First Act of Summer by Joanna Glen

📚 Blurb
Swipe image to read.

Joanna's incredible Maybe, Perhaps, Possibly stole my heart back in June 2024 and I haven't stopped raving about it since. So you can imagine how excited I was when I found out I had won a signed copy of Joanna's latest novel The First Act of Summer!

My Bookish Thoughts 💬
Oh my days... Joanna has captured another piece of my heart.

This is a novel that melodically plucks each and every heartstring, starting off with teasing chords reeling you in while building your curiosity like a beautifully layered piece of classical music. Joanna guides you through her character's childhood through to adulthood, interspersing it with the current day, building up into an emotionally tense and satisfying crescendo.

For me the beautiful harp playing in the story echoed the emotions I felt while reading this emotional, heartbreaking yet hopeful and empowering story.

I think this is one of those books that's best discovered for yourself. The blurb is there on the carousel so I'll simply say this: grab your favourite drink, find a cosiest spot you can and prepare to lose yourself in nostalgia, love, laughter and emotion.

The First Act of Summer is out now.

💭 Which book completely stole a piece of your heart? I'd love to add your recommendations to my TBR. ❤️

I'm now planning which patterns to use to crochet my reading blanket granny square for this special book. Watch this space... 🧶

A huge thank you once again @joannaglenwriter and @boroughpress for sending me this gorgeous signed copy, and the gorgeous hand written postcard. I will treasure them both.

This month’s book club pick was All My Mothers by @joannaglenwriter and it gave us plenty to talk about!

A story about love, loss, belonging, and the people who shape us, it left us all missing our mums a little more and asking the question: what really makes a mother?

Beautifully written, heartfelt, and full of quiet moments that stay with you. A solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from us.

Restaurant pairing: @brindisa_tapas

📚 Have you read it? We’d love to hear your thoughts.👇🏻

I'm on an absolute high after last night at @chapter34books where I interviewed @joannaglenwriter and @franquinn21 about their new books, The First Act of Summer and The Scandalous Ladies Football Club.

It was a first for me but both Fran and Jo were just so fabulous to talk to that they honestly made it easy.

A huge thanks to @the_sara_post @mybookscape @littlewolfsbooks @bobsterw2 @louise.clarke111 @ellieclarke7 and the ladies from my book club for the support and to Kelly at the bookshop for allowing me to host!

Thanks also to @tomsharpe.proj for the photos!

It's definitely something I'd like to do again!

What a wonderful evening I’ve had. I attended a book event at @wordonthestreetbookshop hosted by @louisefeinauthor with @franquinn21 and @joannaglenwriter talking about their new books - The Scandrlous Ladies Football Club and The First Act of a summer. Louise has also had a book out this year - The Book of Forbidden Words.

What a warm and friendly event this was . All three writers are engaging and witty and passionate about reading and writing and I could have listened to them all night.

I have read both TSLFC and TBOFWs and thoroughly recommend them both. I’m also very excited to read The First Act of Summer especially as some of it is set on Mudefird Spit and as a geography teacher this location really appeals to me.

I was also lucky enough to have a lovely chat with @nikkismith_author whose book The Last Place You Look came out last week.
A great evening - thank you all. by @joannaglenwriter

We had the fantastic @joannaglenwriter on the latest show talking about her new novel The First Act of Summer. You can hear the show on @radioreverb and listen to the podcast wherever you listen to them

❤️🌞As children, Hester and Elias were inseparable. Every year, their families would spend the summer together at their beach huts on a wild and windswept sandbank, where the two of them never left each other’s side.

But childhood friendships can stretch and warp as you grow up, and in the summer of 1976, the year they turned 14, Hester did a terrible thing that would shatter both of their lives.

For her 60th birthday, Hester goes back to her family’s beach hut to hide from the husband she wants to leave and the daughters she’s never fully understood. It is here that she finally faces up to what she did that fateful summer, wondering whether it’s ever too late to become the person you were meant to be. And if there’s still a chance of finding Elias again…🌞❤️
