🎠 Occasion: #Joanneleungproposal👍🏻 Proposal story: The client planned a romantic date out with his girlfriend on a limo tour along the Pacific Coast Highway before a fancy dinner. What she didn't know was that he was going to propose to her at Point Dume in front of 2 roaring whales (Yes, a mom and a baby whale!) during a truly amazing sunset with light fingers streaming down the clouds from a distance. He got down to her on one knee. The crowd of whale watchers caught on and gave them a very heartwarming cheer! This was the moment after she said yes. I think the magnitude of the meaning of the proposal jst sank in. I'm going to disclose 3 personal facts and I would love to read facts about YOU in the comments! •1. 📷by yours truly--Yes, it's a selfie! I took about 30 to have 1 chosen, yes, pathetic I know! My camera was set on a tripod and it was taken in the middle of a natural preserve at f/16 so the focus wasn't the hardest part. It was me trying to run to the spot that I want without looking like I was falling over to the pokey plants or making a silly face unintentionally that was hard. All in exactly 10 seconds as I didn't have a remote trigger.••2.I love camping and being in the nature. Being dirty without shower for days doesn't bother me one bit. 🎡Occasion: #Joanneleungengagement•🕺🏼Posing tip: My relationship with photography has always been about feelings. Technicality is a great asset but what moves me in a photograph has much higher priority. I love moments when you strip all the expectations away and reveal the raw selves as what the subjects are. Here she was kneeling down to the level of this short flowery bush and it could be a weird situation to get comfortable and "raw", but with verbal cues, you could do that! The natural instinct when you know you are gonna be photographed is to look at the camera, to smile, to look pretty, or to look tall and slim by angling your body certain ways. 🎡Occasion: #Joanneleungengagement 👍🏻Photography tip: Should you freak out when there is a sudden thick fog rolling in during your shoot? My answer is: rough it out. Yes, most of the time it would look bleh and blurry and all white and uninteresting, but if you don't insist on trying, you may probably miss a moment like this when the sun breaks through just enough to have a very cinematic, dramatic setting! It looked like that in person and it literally lasted 15 seconds. All the other shots were in thick fog after this point. 🎠Occasion: #Joanneleungwedding🕺Posing tip: Sisterly love--I saw the closeness of these sisters during the group photos and knew right there and then that I had to capture their special moments. I wanted to show off the low back on the bride's dress and a real moment at the same time. A quick request for them walk away from me on the low tide, and "just think of the time they went to the beach together as kids" gave me exactly what I needed: genuine smiles when they were transported back in time.••📸Photography tip: I love natural reactions, and in order to freeze the moments, it's safer to shoot at higher shutterspeed in case they move around quickly and you still want to shoot really sharp. 🎠Occasion: #Joanneleungwedding #joanneleungfilm🕺🏼Photography tip: Bridal portrais posing--sitting down is a great option (if the dress is not too tight). It allows them to be shot from a slightly higher than eye level which enlarges the eyes, and create a great body curve that you simply can't get if the bride is standing up. Angle of the shot: now, I don't really like the extreme lifting of the camera shooting down for portraits, because it takes the power away from the person and make their chins too tiny. I find it way more flattering when it's at eye level, or slightly above eye level, for a well-balanced, approachable, angle just like you would normally look at a person in real life. That for me is a good foundation for a portrait that speaks to me emotionally. When it's shooting from high to low, sure, you eliminate the double chin, but it's also very weird that you don't have any neck and the body gets squished below your head. 🎠 Occasion: #Joanneleungproposal•👍🏻Posing tip: : A sneaky shot of the newly engaged couple--I love being intentionally "sneaky" for many reasons. Very often I place my clients where I see visual interests, or interesting light, and then guide them through a mental "set up" for what I'd love to see. I placed them behind the helicopter shooting through the windows, and told them to "communicate with their eyes", and "enjoy the moment that they are engaged when no one else know about this secret yet". It's intentional but real, they won't be just chatting away. I think it's so important to set the tone mentally as a photographer. You'd think everyone could do it when you are born with this phenotype, but I learned that apparently it's not that easy to come by!••📸Photography tip: This kid was one year old and she looked the happiest in her own crib stuffed with balloons🎈🎈🎈! 🎠 Occasion: #Joanneleungproposal👍🏻 Behind the scene story: She flew in from India to LA with her best friend for traveling. Little did she know, her boyfriend was trailing behind by a few hours on another flight from India to LAX to surprise her. Still jet lagged, he came to LACMA at the exact time she was planning on being at LACMA, and with the friend's help to drag her to check out the urban lights, he dropped down on one knee to ask if she would marry him. He travelled so many hours with all these secret plans just to give her a surprise of a lifetime! That was so incredibly sweet. She was definitely very surprised!
