[João Modé (@joao.mode) integrates Respiração [Breath], the inaugural exhibition of ART CUT’26 (Triennial of Arts of Catholic Universities), presenting “CHÃO e|and CHAOS + AQUI” in the basement of Museu Universitário Solar Grandjean de Montigny (@solarpucrio), PUC-Rio. Chief-curated by Nuno Crespo (@_nuno_crespo) with Luiz Camillo Osorio (@luizcamilloosorio) and Carlos Eduardo Félix da Costa under Exercises in Empathy.

The intervention engages with the Solar’s history and architecture. Modé coats parts of the floor with clay, the building’s original material, responding to its arches, humidity, ceiling height, and scale. The site-specific work incorporates historical elements, such as a bamboo arbor, and screens “AQUI” [HERE], an autonomous film in progress since 2009 exploring photography, time, and memory through travel records since the 1980s.]

The exhibition “Junção”, by @joao.mode , at @pacoimperial_rj , presents works and objects that span his artistic career, forming an organism in constant construction.

Instead of obeying a logic of conclusion, the exhibition is organized as a network that proposes spatial and symbolic connections between the works, the exhibition space, and the visitors. It brings together artworks, objects of affection, and remembered elements—testimonies permeated by the passage of time and dialogue with architecture.

João Modé, it's your day!, and our entire team is thinking of you warmly, with deep appreciation for all you’ve shared with us over the years. Your presence in the gallery has been a constant source of inspiration, and we’re grateful for the thoughtful, playful energy you bring to your work.

For over a decade, you’ve shown us that geometric abstraction can be natural, playful, and deeply true. Since 2013, when you first began stitching together fabrics and embroidery to create your Paninhos, you've continued to expand a visual language that pays homage to the legacy of Brazilian Modernism from the 1950s and ‘60s — while making it entirely your own.

Since 2018, your inclusion of beads, traditionally used to craft guias in African and South American indigenous cultures, has added yet another layer of meaning and connection. Your collaboration with Xavante Indian to learn traditional beading techniques speaks to your ongoing curiosity, respect, and commitment to cultural dialogue.

Your work reminds us that abstraction is not a distant idea — it’s alive, rooted, and radiant.

Last Saturday we set up the NET Project on the pilotis of MAM-RJ [Museum of Modern Art / Rio de Janeiro] twenty years after the first installation in October 2003.

I started the NET Project in 2002 when I decided to gather different ropes with knots, bows, and other types of ties inside my home studio. I soon drew a parallel with the relationships we build in life: some very strong, others fragile, and I thought about inviting people to participate in the work.

The REDE Project is an interactive work. It is never exposed. It only exists when it is activated with public participation. The artist is just a proponent.

And the relationship with the virtual network is inevitable. Each node is connected to all the others. If we move one point in the network, the entire network will be activated.

The project was mounted in Japan, France, Germany, Brazil… by @joao.mode

João Modé‘s „GEOM POEM“ opened last Saturday and is running till July 29 in our gallery in Zurich at Zahnradstrasse 21.

"GEOM POEM" continues the research into geometric abstractionism Joao Modé has been conducting for the past ten years. In 2013 the artist started to sew together fabric and embroidered them. These Paninhos mark the beginning of this ongoing body of work. The Panhinos and the featured new works in the project space are a tribute to the Geometric Abstract Art tradition that coined the term Brazilian Modernism in the 1950s and Sixties. Since 2018
Modé includes beads in his works that are traditionally used to make guias - necklaces common in African and South-American indigenous cultures. Their Layout is based on strict geometric patterns that are shared amongst tribal cultures through jewelry and body painting designs. Modé recently collaborated with a Xavante Indian to learn their traditional beading technique and applied his thereby acquired insights in a new series of works.

We are looking forward to your visit!
