I want to share a story. An ongoing story going back over 200 years. Refugio El Recuerdo is a farm located in Boyacá, Colombia. It has been in my family for generations. It was formerly split into multiple parcels of land, but it was unified and maintained by my grandfather.

I grew up coming to El Recuerdo every time I traveled to Colombia from Chicago to see my family. Despite being a newer addition to the farm’s overall history, this house is filled with memories. I remember spending hours playing UNO and Fifa with friends and family who wanted nothing more than to keep me entertained solely because they loved me.

Memories aside, this house was special because it was full of a love that only a grandmother could give. This is la casa de Marlen. My grandmother, Marlen, (actually spelled Marlene) was the most incredible grandmother of all time. Her heart was too big for her own good, and she continues pour that love into this home despite her death in 2016.

Before the house was built, the past generations slept here. There were no floors, barely any running water, no telephones, nothing. It was them and the land. Today, the people that take care of the farm in our absence sleep here (and yes there are plenty of amenities now fortunately).

Going back even further, we move to la cocina. This is the first ever structure built on the property. A lone kitchen that embodies the importance of a meal to my family (especially my grandfather). Soup wasn’t served by 1:00, it was game over.

If guests came to the farm, we hosted them for lunch and ate here: el comedor. Sometimes, we used it to celebrate birthdays or just have a nice family lunch. Nevertheless, it remains a spectacle of our beautiful farm.

La cabaña is another structure that my own mother stayed in for a year during the construction of the house. As historic and nice as it is, it honestly gives me the creeps. 💔

Here, you also see some of the dogs. We have kept a handful of dogs on the farm for years, giving them a home where they can roam free and get the love they deserve. Many dogs in Colombia are neglected and left to survive on the streets, but not here.
