[PART 3] How can we make something for World Cup that carries our message?

The pyramids were once called the King’s vanity project, and now they’re a wonder of the world.

People will doubt you before they celebrate you. That’s the idea behind what we built for Hypebeast Cup.

A football training cone, cast as a monument. Two steel cones and a ball. We started with a 3D printed prototype. Clean, sharp and perfect. But it was too light and had no gravitas. It didn’t feel earned.

So we started over in raw steel, folded from a single sheet and decided not to give it any finishing touches. We’ve always enjoyed the qualities of patina. The texture, the wearing of time. So, we let it rust and the final result was perfect.

A monument to ambition, going against the grain. A reminder that you can set your goal anywhere you want. by @joash.space

When 22 people chase one ball, they call it football. But when I chase my goal, I get called delusional.

So when @hypebeast asked us to come up with a collaboration idea for Hypebeast Cup, this is exactly where my head went.

Football is the one place the world lets you be obsessed. But every great player was once a kid told to focus on school.

Same as anyone who ever built something of their own.
Go get a real job. Don’t waste time with your hobby. Can you even earn money by doing this?

And that’s why we say fuck ‘em all. You don’t need permission to run in a different direction.

We want to make something for the people who set their own goalposts. And now the question is: how can we make something for World Cup that carries our message? by @joash.space

At the center of the year-old multidisciplinary space @toko__noma is art director Joash Thum (@joash.space), who co-founded the place with the veteran gallerist Ken Tan.

The 29-year-old’s own background, which covers graphic design to advertising, has instilled a discipline in being precise. But instead of wrapping it up in a neat bow for clients, he now uses that framework to create shows that allow ideas to marinate and stay a little strange and unpolished.

“I believe it keeps things honest, and the work interesting.” So firm is his conviction that he’s since left his advertising job to fully concentrate on programming for Tokonoma.
