every sunday, same thing. quotes and invoices at the table while the day goes past the window.

mark's a builder. he wasn't behind on the work, he was behind on the writing up of the work, which is a different problem and nobody warns you about it.

lost a bathroom last month and it had nothing to do with money.

quoted it tuesday. walked it properly, measured everything, wrote it up that night after tea because i wanted it right. sent it thursday morning feeling pretty good about it.

he'd booked someone on the wednesday. never even opened mine.

wasn't a better tradie. wasn't cheaper. he was just there first. so now i price it standing in the room with them and it's gone before i'm back in the ute.

the bloke who quotes on site beats the bloke who quotes better. every time.

nobody tells you that when you start. you think the job goes to whoever's sharpest on price, so you go home and sit with it and take your time and get it right.

meanwhile someone who's half the tradie you are has already sent theirs from the driveway and the customer's said yes, because they wanted it dealt with, not perfect.

the thirty seconds is just doing it before you leave. price, name, send. that's the whole habit.

for years i genuinely thought the saturday was part of the job.

you finish the week, you sit down, you catch up on everything you let slide. quotes you promised on tuesday, invoices from a job you finished a fortnight ago, working out who still owes you. four or five hours, every week, unpaid.

it isn't part of the job. it's just what happens when none of it gets done as you go.

quote goes out from the ute now, invoice follows when the job's marked done, and jobbit chases whatever's outstanding without me touching it.

made every game this season. first time in about six years.

every second week there's another article about the robots coming for our jobs.

meanwhile the bloke who can get a hot water service into a 600 cavity without swearing more than twice has a three month waiting list and no uni debt. nobody's building a machine that'll crawl under a queenslander in january.

the only thing ai's actually come for is the paperwork. that's the bit jobbit does. writes the quote up off a sentence, chases the invoice, tells you how the month actually went if you ask it.

we're alright. the admin isn't.

the invoices were never her job. they just ended up being hers.

she's got her own work to do. he's got a memory like a sieve about what he quoted on tuesday. so at ten at night she's the one going through it, trying to price a job for a bloke she's never met.

he does it standing at the job now and it's sent before he's back in the van. first she hears about it is when it's already been paid.

it's his job again. that's the whole thing.
