when my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer, members of our local chinese church brought dumplings to our home everyday. over time, dumplings came to represent more than just food: community, care, and what it meant to show up in times of need.

drawing from my family’s story, my dear friend @anmazingily created a pho-inspired dumpling dish as the final course of the average villagers dinner party. an started average villagers in memory of their late friend, jonathan, and one of the last conversations they shared was on what it meant to be an average villager, compassionately showing up for their village. to see the dish that carried my own family through difficult days, now enjoyed by a room full of 28 (!) strangers — was more than special to witness.

pictured: deconstructed beef dumpling, cooked in warm pho broth. tastes like a hug. 🥟❤️ taken in Brooklyn, New York by @jobby_joy
