Most of my emotions today feel like this young girl, who wants her mommy! She wants to eat your food, to feel your hugs, to be yelled at for not standing up for herself , or scolded to clean her room. She’s selfish…
And, then there’s the adult child with the hole in her heart, realizing that the woman she is today is still so much of you! She’s grateful…
And I smile through my tears. I love and feel your presence, Mom.

Every character in my novel has a sound.

Justice is the blues.
Olive is gospel.
Cayenne is R&B.
Julien is classical.
Janelle is modern and urban.
Red is jazz.

Ten years ago, I began writing a story inspired by my childhood in Dayton, Ohio, and the complicated journey of reconciling with my father before he unexpectedly passed away. Writing the story became a way to process grief, memory, and the spaces in between.

Over time, the characters found their voices—and their music. What began as personal reflection slowly grew into the novel Quiet on the Porch.
