While the summer is coming to a close and I reflect on how I haven’t been as “mountain objective” focused, I think think about what this summer has taught me. The first year of home ownership: in the mountains with cougars and bears out my front door. Living slow and take in the little things: Daisy in some daisies, our neighborhood creek, the local lake, the front yard deer Daisy loves to stare at. Little purposeful trips: whale watching and live music, beach time with my sister’s family, one wild and crazy trip to Russia. A lot of training: my backyard mountain romps, running the best 5K time I’ve done in 10 years, becoming a (baby) runner. Learning: being a full time student while also working two jobs, volunteering at the fire station and with SAR when I can, and now fire academy. Life looks a little different in this season, but I know it’s meant to set me up to some really great things in the future and I am grateful. 🫶🏻

A very brief, but beautiful, overnight trip to the coast to surprise my sister’s family on their vacation. Sunshine beach days well spent, sand still stuck between the toes, a very tired (happy) doggo, and the best hugs from the fam. Grateful for these little moments.✨

A beautiful morning walk up our backyard mountain and an afternoon paddle at our neighborhood lake. Grateful for days like today. 🫶🏻

My lungs are still in recovery from bug mountain time so I took it easy. But it felt good to be back outside. Here’s to hoping I can get back to the full swing of things soon! 🩵

A love letter to a country that holds a piece of my heart. I had never left the US before moving to Turkey, and spending a year and a half there during my formative years of adulthood immensely shaped who I am as a person today. Beyond the most delicious restaurants, bars, and tattoo shops scattered along the alley, I found a country rich with culture.

While I wasn’t allowed to leave the base often, whenever I did, I found families in the village where I lived inviting me into their multi-generational homes to break bread with them and even offer to take me on their family vacations. Kids chased me down the streets on their bicycles. Taxi drivers were willing to spend their entire day with me, taking me to old castle ruins and introducing me to people in their communities. There was always so much joy and love poured into teaching me about the country, its history, its language, and its people.

Returning to Turkey to visit Istanbul was like visiting an old friend. The same familiar sights, sounds, and smells were all still there, but I experienced them through a much wider lens than I had before.

I will forever be grateful for these memories and the little interwoven moments throughout time that helped shape the person I am today.

Until we meet again. Teşekkür ederim. 🇹🇷❤️

Mountain Diary - 6/23: Today was an acclimatization hike. Shortly after breakfast we donned our harnesses, double boots, ice axes, and crampons for the first time on this trip. We spent 4 hours hiking up to 15.1K. Let me tell you, Russians apparently don’t believe switchbacks. Our trail up and over the mountain is literally just one straight shot up the damn mountain. It was another toasty one, the amount of sunscreen sweat seeping into my contacts blurring my vision and burning my eyes. Wooo wee. A good indicator of what’s to come. Today I am grateful for sitting toilets. It’s still a wooden outhouse with a hole in the ground as we have been using, but they built up a nice little seat around it. It makes a world of difference and I can’t wait to use my own porcelain throne back home soon. The things I miss: my dog, my bed, and my toilet haha. 😄

Mountain Diary - 6/22: Today we carried the rest of our gear from Camp 1 to get settled in Camp 2. Today the Italians motto, to which they randomly come up to me throughout the day and yell, is “GOD BLESS AMERICA!” And they laugh and laugh. Today is warmer than yesterday, I’ve been sweating buckets! Once I looked up from my fumbling feet, alas! We made it to camp two. A little more rugged than camp one, and in the snow. The sunset after dinner was pretty incredible. Alpenglow all around, cloud inversion, we even saw a little arctic fox!!

Mountain Diary - 6/21 (My Birthday!): I woke up to the Italians singing me happy birthday. I swear, they sang happy birthday at least 4 or 5 times throughout the day, accompanied by hugs and cheek kisses. Despite language barrier, these gentleman bring so much character to the trip. We do our best to understand one another. It involves a lot of hand motions and searching for the right words and “yes! Yes!” Once the right words are found. It was an acclimization and gear carry day. After a breakfast of polenta and charcuterie, we set out to hike and stash our gear just below Camp 2. We got to play Disney princess with all the cute little marmots, made our way through the windy hillside patched with snow, over the moon rocks, through the mushroom stones and back down to camp. At dinner they surprised me with a cake 🥹 Ps: they have showers at base camp, and they were free!!
