He is a German photographer and master printer celebrated for his craftsmanship in analogue black-and-white printing. Originally trained in architecture, he later devoted himself fully to photography.
He opened his first professional darkroom in Aachen in 1984. After passing his instructor's examination at the Aachen Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) in 1993, he soon became a member of the examination board at the Cologne Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
He gained his international reputation in the years following his move to Berlin-Mitte, the epicenter of the photographic scene. Since 2001, he has been producing all formats of analog black and white photography there with uncompromising quality.
High-caliber photographic artists appreciate his work, including, among many others, Dieter Appelt, Harald Hauswald, Horst Hamann, Klaus Kinold, Will McBride, Ulrike Ottinger, Heinrich Riebesehl, Hans-Christian Schink, Dayanita Singh, and Thomas Struth.
Institutions such as Edition Panorama, Institut Heidersberger, CO Galerie, Galerie Kicken, Museum Hamburger Bahnhof, and the Museum für Fotografie also rely on his first-class work.
In his own projects he dedicates himself to landscape and industrial photography, mostly using a large format camera.
As an instructor at PhotoWerkBerlin, he shares his extensive expertise through specialized analogue printing courses.

Nur noch diese Woche ist Jochen Rohners Ausstellung „ELAIA II – The Big Ones“ mit großformatigen, analogen Portraits von Olivenbäumen im FAP Showroom (Forum Analoge Photographie) in Berlins Ackerstraße 7 zu sehen, schaut vorbei!

Am Donnerstag, den 23. Juli 2026 um 18 Uhr findet ein Artist Talk statt (Anmeldung erbeten, spontane Gäste ebenfalls willkommen, Eintritt frei), und am Samstag, den 25. Juli 2026 um 19 Uhr die Finissage!

Jochen Rohner ist durch und durch ein Vertreter der alten Schule. Seit mehr als fünfundvierzig Jahren beschäftigt er sich mit analoger Fotografie und betreibt seit seinem Umzug von Aachen nach Berlin im Jahr 2001 ein auf Schwarz-Weiß-Fotografie spezialisiertes Fotolabor. Während sein handwerkliches Können und seine Präzision seinen architektonischen Hintergrund erkennen lassen, schöpft Rohner den Großteil seiner visuellen Inspiration aus der Natur mit all ihren Eigenheiten und Unwägbarkeiten. Er begegnet Hindernissen und neuen Anfordeungen mit der Gelassenheit eines neugierigen Geistes und nimmt sie als das an, was sie sind: Chancen, sich weiterzuentwickeln, indem er neue und unerwartete Wege beschreitet.

What makes olive trees so appealing to Jochen Rohner is not just how well they suit the negative format he uses. His fascination with these gnarled and rugged ‘creatures’ was immediate when he first encountered them on a Mallorcan finca in the early 1980s.

The knowledge that some of these trees have been alive for hundreds of years, and the thought of what they might have gone through and witnessed, fills him with enthusiasm. He has photographed over a hundred olive trees, using his large-format camera to gently explore their individual character as well as their unique shapes and structures—sometimes even in the company of curious wildlife. He knows the ‘names’ and locations of almost every single tree. Their age and ‘wisdom’ are literally embedded in Rohner’s photographs.

In his exhibition ELAIA II „The Big Ones“, Jochen presents large-format (1.25 x 1.80 m) analog black and white photographs of the olive trees.

Join us for the opening on Thursday, July 2, 2026 from 7 – 10 pm at the FAP Showroom (Forum Analoge Photographie) in Berlin’s Ackerstraße in Mitte!
