i run just about every day. 109 times this year. it’s hard to put into words all of the wonderful things the sport has given me over those 109 runs and all the runs that came before them. i take pictures and videos on almost every one of my daily runches, long runs in new cities, easy runs in the cold and rain, tempo runs searching for flowers in the springtime because every one feels so special: every time i get outside, i’m reminded of how lucky i am to be alive, to move my legs and to breathe air into my lungs.

i believe running has changed me for the better. i wouldn’t trade my favorite hobby for anything. here are a few memories from my favorite runs. happy global running day peeps. by @jocrane17

previous best: 5:11:24
goal time: 5:06:00
chip time: 4:58:05 (!)

personal best swim (32:26->30:23); personal best average power (217->238) and normalized power (221->252) on the bike; and personal best 70.3 run (1:58:28->1:38:51)

the swim was salty, the bike was hilly, and the run was pure electricity. really happy with how i did, especially since i didn’t get any open water swims or outdoor rides in beforehand. this is the first time i ran conservatively in a 70.3 and it paid off. instead of going out super fast in the first few miles and blowing up, i took it easy and constantly forced myself to slow down for the first 9 miles, then i ramped it up for the last 5k, which really paid off. my paces from miles 9-13 were 7:44, 7:35, 7:24, 7:16, 7:03. beyond stoked.

also, to cap it all off, i had the best photographer and cheerleader on the course (if you listen closely, you can faintly hear anna cheering for me in the videos she took); i saw all my triathlon heroes in what was maybe the most stacked field outside of a world championship event; and i even gave kristian blummenfelt a high five when we were on our respective warm up jogs before the race. a great day. taken in Oceanside Pier by @jocrane17

previous best 5:53:49
goal time 5:30:00
chip time 5:11:24 (!)

holy smokes. an absolutely outstanding race. improved my swim from 36:54 two years ago to 32:27; improved my bike from 3:02:33 to 2:33:28(!); and improved my run from 2:07:13 to 1:58:28.

a lot of emotions but i’m over the moon and super proud of myself. 8 months ago when i signed up for this race i was freshly cleared by the cardiologist. i didn’t think i’d ever get back to where i was. proud to say i proved myself wrong. feeling very very very grateful and so lucky to have the best support crew in @annacdarling and @lisaahlness

this was a big weekend for me. 6 months ago to the day i was at mayo clinic for testing for chest pain i had been having since july, chest pain that sent me to the emergency room after a run at mcdowell dam (where the race today was held!) and left me sedentary for 5 months.

at mayo, they ran every test they had and determined that the myocarditis that had originally caused my chest pain had cleared up, and even though i still had chest pain, my heart was okay, so they told me i could train again. saturday was my first race since then.

we didn’t swim because there was blue green algae found in the lake. it’s too bad we didn’t swim (especially because the swim is my best event!), but it was cool to do a new kind of event and i’m happy with my result (especially because i’m not much of a runner!). i had a great warmup, my nutrition was dialed in, i negative split both runs (and the second was faster than the first. intentionally!), and i had a solid bike.

it was great to compete with a big chunk of my family, and to see a bunch of new multisport athletes like @nick_lembke8 and @dakota___wagner . good work gang.

i’m happy with how this one turned out. but mostly i just feel really, really lucky to be doing what i love again.
