Lucky, lucky me! An Honour Book and a Shadow Judging Award! Thanks to the @cbcaustralia for the honour and to all the kids that voted for Broccoli.
Congratulations, of course, to Briony and Cate, as well as the teams at Little Book Press and Affirm Press.
It was lovely to be at the ceremony to pick up the awards today but, best of all, I got to hang out with a whole bunch of lovely kid lit creators. by @jodabrowski

EXCITING NEWS! The Thing About Christmas was announced today as an Honour Book in the Early Childhood category at the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year Awards!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching ‘Dear Broccoli’ being performed by the team from @meerkatproductions at St Kilda Park PS. I was totally blown away.
Amanda and Carl have done an incredible job of staying true to the story but bringing so much more to it. There’s a sycophantic carrot, an annoying little brother and a very unhealthy (but surprisingly wise) Grandpa.
The show was funny, the songs were clever and the last number made me cry! Naomi and Jeremy were fantastically energetic and engaging performers, they had the kids in fits of laughter. It was a tight script and a polished production. I couldn’t have been more impressed.
I give it 🥦🥦🥦🥦🥦 (which is the highest rating you can get in vegetable-themed theatre)!

It was such a good decision teaming up with @catetheartist on ‘Dear Broccoli’ that we decided to go again! But this time it’s without Frank and there’s not a vegetable in sight. Instead we introduce the delightful Albert, who is having a totally good-decision-free day. Or is he?…

Thanks to @tashbesliev who helped find the good idea in what started out as a very convoluted manuscript as well as the entire team @affirmpress who worked their usual magic and pulled it all together beautifully. And, of course, huge thanks to Cate for bringing Albert and his family to life in such a gorgeous and fun way.

We’ve been extremely lucky to have some wonderful speech pathologists work with our family over the years, which makes this shortlisting extra special.

MGM Review 58 - The Making of Martha Mayfield - @jodabrowski - @affirmpress

One of the last books I read from the @cbcaustralia Younger Readers notables list, this one really resonated with me as a teacher, and it’s one I highly recommend for other teachers to read.

Martha Mayfield has always had great ideas, but as the quiet kid they never get heard. So after a few sudden changes in her life that leave her feeling flat, she realises she might have to make some changes herself and put herself out there a little bit. But that’s not easy, particularly with a group project, a school captaincy campaign and her mums’s unemployment hanging over her. But Martha is determined to make the most of it. Will Martha finally step out of the shadows and show what she’s capable of or will the limelight be too much for her to handle?

This is a stunning story. It’s a book for all those quiet students out there. The ones that have so much to say, but are unheard. It’s a book about fitting in and finding your place. It shines a light on different personalities and that what we see on the outside may not always be what it seems on the inside. It shows that we might have to change a little bit to grow, but we don’t have to change completely and can keep the core aspects of ourselves. It shows us that it’s ok to ask ‘What if…?’ questions, but maybe if we ask too many, we will never see the light of our decisions. Ultimately, it’s a book about relationships - with yourself and others - and how we can manage those for our own growth and happiness.

It’s a book that will move you and leave you smiling. Thank you Jo for writing it and for the gentle reminder that there are so many different ways for our students to shine.
