Important Update: On the Hiyu has been cleared to operate.

We are pleased to share that On the Hiyu has been cleared to resume normal operations.

Following the discovery of an issue with the vessel’s fire hose system during required safety testing, our teams from On the Hiyu, Lake Union Dry Dock, and the U.S. Coast Guard worked together through yesterday evening to fabricate the required replacement part and complete the necessary repairs.

This morning at 7:30 AM, the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a full inspection of both the repair and the vessel. Following their inspection, they officially removed our No Sail Status and gave us the green light to resume operations.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated teams at the U.S. Coast Guard and Lake Union Dry Dock for their professionalism, expertise, and partnership in helping us safely return the vessel to service.

To all of our guests impacted by the postponement of our Ferry & Friends events on Thursday, July 23 and Friday, July 24, as well as those affected by the relocation of CultFest on Friday, July 24, we offer our heartfelt apologies. While the decision was difficult, ensuring the safety of our guests, crew, artists, and staff will always be our highest priority.

Guests impacted by the postponed Ferry & Friends events, or who would like to request a refund related to CultFest, may email info@onthehiyu.com. Together with our friends at Fair Isle Brewery, we are committed to processing every request as quickly as possible, and to rescheduling Ferry & Friends. New dates to follow.

Important Update: Ferry & Friends – July 23 & July 24

To our Ferry & Friends community,

We want to sincerely apologize to everyone affected by the postponement of this week’s Ferry & Friends events aboard On the Hiyu.

Yesterday, Thursday, July 23, during our routine safety testing in preparation for the event, our team identified several electrical systems that were not operating to the standard required for us to proceed in good conscience. Safety has always been our highest priority, so we made the difficult decision not to sail while those issues were being addressed.

Our team worked through the night and all day in partnership with guidance from the U.S. Coast Guard to inspect and rectify the identified issues. During additional safety testing today, Friday, July 24, another issue was discovered involving one of the vessel’s fire hose systems. The U.S. Coast Guard requires this system to be fully operational before the vessel can safely carry passengers.

As a result, we have made the decision to postpone both this week’s Ferry & Friends events. While we know this is incredibly disappointing, we will never compromise on the safety of our guests, crew, artists, or staff.

We are working diligently to complete all required repairs and inspections and will share updated information regarding rescheduled dates, ticket options, and next steps as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back aboard very soon.

Finally have a moment to let everything sink in.

The last two days have been a massive milestone for ViViD and EXP Seattle! Producing our first event at the iconic Seattle Waterfront, specifically at Pier 62, was a dream come true.

Today’s Sea Sound EXP event on the Hiyu felt like a significant shift for us.

We are growing together and proudly sharing our love for dance music and the city.

For me personally it's really hard to believe everything I have ever dreamed of is actually coming to fruition.

Thank you for the overwhelming support ViViD Fam! And to everyone that has contributed to make this all possible I will always be in your debt. You guys are amazing.

The MV Hiyu.

Once a working ferry.
Carrying people, cars, and stories across the Puget Sound.

They called it “the little ferry that could.”

Through decades of service, it adapted, endured, and kept moving. From Vashon to the San Juans. From full routes to backup duty. From near retirement to something entirely new.

Today, it lives a different life.
Still bringing people together. Just in a different way.

Behind the scenes, it’s hard to even put into words the effort it takes. The countless hours, the people, the work that goes into getting the Hiyu ready and Coast Guard approved each season.

But what it gives back is something else entirely.

A space to reset.
A space to create.
To reconnect.
To be present with each other in a way that’s hard to find anywhere else.

And somewhere along that annual journey, it gives all of us a new lease on life.

Maybe that’s what makes it special.
It was never just about where it was going.

It’s about what we find when we’re out there together.
