This is me.April is Autism Awareness Month, and April 2 is the specific day the world recognizes this disability. Yes, it is considered a disability as per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DMS-5), what was used to determine my official diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Level 1. So yes, I have a disability. It’s fine. I consider the official diagnosis essential to the tremendous personal growth I’ve had the past few years, because it has allowed me to examine myself in a new context, and view the world through that shifted context as well.I am grateful for friends and family who have embraced this newly revealed part of me, who have been patiently listening to me, who have been with me as I sort it all out, and are of course still with me!I have been very fortunate to be a part of Albion Financial, which has accommodated my needs so that I may be the most productive I can be to the office and the clients.I’ve been fortunate to have those around me that already reflected an accepting attitude of those on the spectrum. Not many are as fortunate. Please recognize there is much work to be done in understanding ASD as a unique feature, not a bug, in people. by @joe.mzd

Fun fact: I was an ordained minister of the Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. I’d say more than half my (current) followers don’t know the *real* reason I moved to Salt Lake CIty. I sometimes say it was a transfer from the North Star Apple Store to The Gateway Apple Store (and that would be true), but…But the move was to fulfill an assignment I received after graduating from the accredited religious program known then as the Ministerial Training School, or MTS, in March of 2010. It used to be limited to just single men generally in their 20s to 40s, but now the program has since been replaced with one that includes married couples and single women (hashtag progress). The program started decades ago, was held a few times a year in different parts of the world. I was in the 115th class. It was pretty exclusive and a big deal to be admitted.It was 8 weeks of intense study. Pretty much every waking moment was dedicated to it. But as it usually happens when a group of people are together for weeks on end, abundant memories were made and bonds were formed that for some have lasted to this day, a decade and a half later. Graduates received assignments a few months later to cities across the US. A classmate and I were assigned to Salt Lake City, Utah.It was a relief and a tremendous sense of accomplishment when I received that diploma. From pretty much high school until then, about 10 years, much of my decisions in life were driven to achieve this goal (that is, after I received my rejection letter from Bethel, which was my original goal). That meant decisions like moving to Texas instead of staying in the Southeast where I grew up, staying home instead of living on my own well into my 20s, or turning away from possible romantic interests. I am grateful to my parents that they “allowed” me to get a college degree. Back then, it was frowned upon at best and a sign of spiritual weakness at worst to pursue education beyond an associates degree. Only recently, like literally last year, has it been clear it shouldn’t be looked down on. I was able to quickly secure a job in my new assignment. .I didn't start my Apple Retail journey in Utah, but the bulk of the memories and the strongest bonds were made here. It started at The Gateway (memories of the Urban Outfitters where @airplane_wayne and I would grab vinyl on sale, my first Starbucks drink at the clock tower, the Sur-la-Table where I finally got the pan I was eyeing for months before it was marked down and which I still use today) and eventually shifted to City Creek. There was just something about working at those stores during that time, when we were busiest selling and servicing iPhone 3G's (popping those displays off with suction cups) and 4's (Antenna-gate), when we still sold thousands of dollars in iMacs every hour, working from 6 pm to 6 am preparing the store for product launches, and watching the early days of YouTube videos ("Porkchop sandwiches!"). But the people.The people there were truly special. I'd joke you were either a Mormon or an ex-Mormon at the Utah stores, but no matter the background, all of us wearing the same Apple shirts and sharing the same gripes about the customers and the company, those bonds spilling into the food court and bars and GB-BBQ's outside those glass doors. Even over a decade later holding coffee sessions with @e.q.photo, @milkmandan, @justinwphoto62, along with special appearances by @manrod22, @sparseplinth, and @__pickle. (My last one will be this Saturday morning, by the way. DM me if you want to join.)We've lost good friends along the way. Most recently Matt. Jay before that. But you'll see here a photo of baby-faced me along with Michael Burks, one of the first Apple losses. He's the one with the pink penis whistle in his mouth. The dude heard I was getting married and heard I wasn't going to have bachelor party, so he insisted he throw me one at his place. He was a kind man, talented, funny, and so thoughtful to have done that for me. I always think of him when I dip my waffle fries in Chick-fil-a sauce. That was the sort of bond and friendship forged behind those BofH doors secured by code 1984 (because what else could it be?). I was at Apple for 6 life-changing years and I will always, always, be grateful for them. by @joe.mzd

- In 30 days, the Utah chapter of my life will come to a close.On June 30, my lease will end, my time at Albion Financial will end after 10.5 years (hopefuly I can work remotely for a bit after?), my Xfinity internet will be cut off, and I’ll spend my final night here. On July 1, I’ll be joining my Dad, uncles, and cousins on their annual camping trip through the Mountain West and eventually head to Texas to start another chapter there. I was accepted for a Master’s program in Facilities Management at UTSA and I start this fall. Although it’s fully online, I’ll be living at an ADU at my parents’ property with an option to travel to campus less than an hour away. There’s an Apple Store at La Cantera not too far from campus, so maybe I’ll work there for a time. Or maybe work at where my Apple journey started back in 2009 in North Star Mall.I have a lot to say about my time here in Utah, and I want to share it (again) to anyone here who is listening. This is me 15.5 years ago stepping foot into Utah for the first time. All I had with me was whatever furniture could fit in the back of my Dad’s truck and any clothes and possessions I could fit in my car. I was facing a new adventure far from home, an uncertain future, single, in debt, with (technically) no job. I’ll be leaving Utah pretty much the same way. Except my bed and TV are bigger. It’s already looking different than when I first took this shot. Switched out the wheels and tires from my old CX-30 and put on the @dirtcomplex TrailSwing. Finally had the final hood decal installed today, completing the aesthetic upgrades including side rocker garnish, the Meridian headlight trim, and the front grill inserts. Next is internals, so the @corksport Turbo Inlet Pipe, along with the @afepower Air Intake, will go in, followed by the JB4 tuner. Unfortunately, I couldn’t bring over the @magnaflow exhaust from the CX-30, so I’ll have to find a worthy substitute. But the real upgrade will be getting the @corksport Skid Plate up under there. Only then will it be ready to hit the trails as I did with the CX-30! by @joe.mzd

Met with up @itsdr0g0n and @joe.mzd early this morning for a cruise up to Utah Valley Overlook. With a wrong run through a canyon..🤣They went along longer than I did to devils kitchen but it was awesome!!! An absolute blast! The fall colors are so pretty here in Utah right now. Well, that was a bummer….I was looking forward to revisiting this spot, which holds fond memories of Matthias and I coming over for lunch from Claffey Printing, my first full-time job. I was last here during my 20th High School reunion (second image) in 2022. Coming back to it like this solidified the feeling I had the whole visit back to the Southeast in June: it’s too different now to look at these places from my childhood and early years of adulthood with fond nostalgia. Everything and everyone has moved on in different paths where I can’t even see their silhouettes against the sky, having disappeared way beyond the horizon. Even my old friends and acquaintances, fewer and fewer, can be gathered together for lunch or dinner when I visit, as they’ve moved away to further and better places and lives. The damage from the hurricane last year has left gashes and scars as well, dark canopies of old oak cleared away to open blue sky. I didn’t feel the joy of coming home anymore. Especially now that I’m living my life so differently from what I envisioned it would be when I’d have the burger and fries lunch special here for $4. Remember those days, when lunch could be had under $10? I was thinking… I should live and experience new things and create new memories, but also be ok should my old ones be overridden and replaced. by @joe.mzd
