Memories from Guanajuato…. continuing south on the Pan American. GTO is of the most stunning architectural cities in North America (a couple from León in here also). Endlessly colorful, surprising, with an absolutely wild underground tunnel system winding beneath it. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had wandering around with a camera here. Officially 3 years on the road. Made it to the Equator and beyond. What a long, strange journey it’s been…. endured some incredible ups and downs. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

A very special visit to the train station where my abuela was born in Sayula, Jalisco Mx 🖤

I got my feet wet visiting old family landmarks, ruins, years ago in Donegal and knew I had to take this opportunity in Sayula…a rural agricultural town in the heart of Jalisco. Abby was the train conductor’s daughter and was literally born in the Sayula train station. Totally surreal and special moment pulling up and spending time with the structure. Abby always had such a strong connection with La Virgen and praying at that mini altar embedded in the walls was an insanely powerful moment …

There are also some wonderful knife workshops in town that I got to visit, I still use my chefs knife daily and it always reminds me of Abby ❤️

Sayula and Tapalpa, the town above it, are both Pueblos Mágicos. I spent several nights in the area camping at this wonderful restaurant perched up on a ridge overlooking Sayula. Tapalpa is such a unique spot in Mx. It’s got a unique cool microclimate up there — with a ton of piney trees and super rustic architecture. The downtown is filled with beautiful white facades, rustic wooden buildings, and pristine Spanish colonial architecture. So walkable and peaceful.

This was two years ago. January 2024. Funny enough, Tapalpa is where they recently caught El Mencho. This whole area was/is CJNG HQ. Never once did I feel remotely unsafe, or even see anything sketchy, but it turns out those guys were tailing me and I was eventually approached by them in Sayula, while I was at the train station. They wanted to know who I was and what I was doing in town. Nothing happened to me. The full story is for another time …

Jalisco is just classic Mexico. I made it a priority to explore this state, down the coast to Colima, then back up through these two Pueblos Mágicos, Tequila, Etzatlán, Ajijic, and GDL. I fully accepted the risks of traveling here and was rewarded with some extremely meaningful experiences. I would encourage everyone to do some family archaeology and go to these places. There is just something to it.

Postcards from the California PCH…. every American should drive US 101 south at least once in their life. The California coast is world famous for a reason. Beyond classic Americana. Timeless.

I had the pleasure of driving the full length of the coast from Crescent City down to San Diego. An endless stream of charming coastal towns, gorgeous beaches, ocean out the window, cruising down the Pacific.

The land of the redwoods and the rugged windswept beaches in Mendocino county give way to Sonoma, the Russian River Valley. Napa. San Francisco.

Monterey county left a huge impression on me….A bunch of these are from that stretch from Pacific Grove —-> 17 Mile Drive —-> Carmel. Unbelievable wealth and beauty on that coastline. Pacific Grove and Carmel are the nicest American coastal towns I’ve ever been to. 17 mile drive is mind blowing.

Big Sur after all that… arguably the most famous portion. So gorgeous.

Santa Barbara unreal

Ojai, Malibu, Los Angeles

Laguna Beach, OC, La Jolla, San Diego ……..

Truly insane what this part of the world has to offer. Top to bottom. Had such a blast. The perfect send-off before crossing into Mx.

All shots unedited shot on @Kodak Portra 400 + some Fuji 400.
