When I was in high school and college I knew I had to throw 88-90 mph to get drafted as a lefty. Not hard compared to today’s standards but it was hard back then. We didn’t have the knowledge we do today. Throwing hard was considered God given and something you couldn’t teach. We know today that’s simply not true. With that being said guys weren’t getting drafted or playing pro ball throwing slower than that. There has always been a threshold. That threshold is just higher now by @joebeimel97

A baseball spin direction, not only determines the movement of the pitch. It can also determine the amount of velocity lost on the way to the plate even though the pitch could be released from the same spot by @joebeimel97

In Episode 8 of The Battery Podcast, hosts Joe Beimel and Brent Dean tackle a topic that’s been building for years — and one that’s now impossible to ignore: the overuse and abuse of young baseball players’ arms.
Joe shares firsthand examples that sparked this conversation — from high school pitchers throwing on back-to-back days, to kids logging excessive pitch counts in short time spans, all in the name of winning games. They break down why this isn’t just bad coaching — it’s a systemic issue driven by lack of education, poor accountability, and a win-now mentality that puts athletes’ long-term health at risk.
Joe and Brent explain why this problem is often misunderstood, why velocity isn’t the real cause of injuries, and how factors like volume, recovery, workload management, and communication are the true drivers behind the rising number of arm injuries in baseball.
They also give practical advice for parents, players, and coaches on how to recognize red flags, track workload, and protect athletes from being overused — especially during critical development years.
This episode is a must-listen for anyone involved in youth or high school baseball who wants to understand what’s really going on — and how to fix it. by @joebeimel97
