WOZZECK - Alban Berg
Conceptual Set Design
⚙️
Wozzeck is a German Opera about a poor soldier who is tormented by his captain and experimented on by an egotistical doctor. These experiments cause him poor health and hallucinations. Wozzeck’s wife, Marie, cheats on him, causing Wozzeck to snap. He kills Marie in a forest and accidentally drowns while trying to hide her body in the lake. (DUDE LIKE HAWAII PART II 😳)

My concept for this design is about human insignificance and smallness. Wozzeck is part of a machine and his fate was decided for him by entities much more powerful than we can imagine. The machine is fate, time, and the social structures that surround him. Wozzeck has no control at all.

As I was reading the show, I just couldn’t shake how much the show reminded me of Hawaii: Part II. So I took a lot of inspiration from that album and Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum. The music of Wozzeck sounds so eerily mechanical while also having a creepiness to it. Like Marvin’s marvelous mecanical museum 😳😳Shoutout to Rob Cantor who I sent this to and he said it looked awesome 🙏

Little Shop of Horrors! 1/2” = 1’-0” scale, Conceptual model

This version of Little Shop focuses on Seymour’s mind. The colors shift from blue to yellow, but are rarely in the green: a state of being “okay” (somewhere that’s green.) It also discusses how- when we stop taking care of ourselves, the space around us gets dirtier. We stop taking care of our surroundings. So, in this version, as the show goes on and Seymour’s sanity decreases, the shop gets consistently less organized to the point where it is a mess by the end of the show.

My Audrey II design also resembles a brain neuron! I was proud of that.
