Some notes on Rejection for #actors and #artists.

Samuel Beckett: rejection is not evidence that you are failing — it is part of the material

Late in his life, Beckett wrote:

“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

It comes from Worstward Ho (1983), and it is often turned into a motivational slogan. But Beckett meant something stranger and more profound than “keep trying until you succeed.” Scholars have pointed out that failure was almost an aesthetic principle for him: the artist is continually confronting the impossibility of perfectly expressing what they want to express.

That has an interesting implication for an actor.

You go into an audition trying to make something live. You offer yourself. Then someone says no — sometimes because you weren’t right for the role, sometimes because of something completely outside your control, sometimes for reasons you’ll never know.

The temptation is to translate:

“They rejected this performance” “They rejected me.”

But perhaps the artist’s job is to refuse that translation.

Your job isn’t to arrange circumstances so that you are never rejected. Your job is to become someone who can keep making the attempt without requiring the world to certify your worth each time.

And there’s an even deeper version:

A career isn’t made out of the auditions you book.

It’s made out of the person you become through all the auditions you were willing to do.

Beckett’s “fail better” can therefore mean: let every rejection make the work more precise, the craft more fearless, the ego slightly less necessary.

Have a great day. I understand you.

What is ACTOR’S FAITH 🎭??

Actor’s faith is the courage to trust yourself when you don’t have all the answers.

It’s trusting your imagination.

Trusting your impulses.

Trusting your scene partner.

Trusting the work you’ve done.

And trusting that something truthful can emerge when you stop trying to control every moment.

Faith doesn’t replace preparation—it completes it.

Prepare deeply. Then let go.
Listen. Respond. Risk.

Be present enough to discover what happens next.

That is where the life of the actor begins.
