After five years away from the studio, Alyssandra Katherine Dance is back.

Join us for one night only at The Gathering Room, hosted by @joegoodeperformancegroup at the Joe Goode Annex, on Friday, August 28 at 8:00 PM.

We will revisit Umbra, a choreographic work first developed through @dovadance DEVICES program. Originally created as an exploration of how choreographic devices can manipulate shadow and movement, Umbra now takes on a deeply personal new narrative.

This reimagined work explores the complexities and hardships of motherhood and caregiving—the sacrifice, loss of agency, and shifting sense of identity that so many mothers and caregivers experience, yet seldom discuss openly.

Don’t miss this return to the stage and the opportunity to experience Umbra in a new light.

This FREE workshop is led by Magdalena Moore, a self-described “baby drag queen.” Participants will celebrate and dive deep into Indigenous perspectives on gender while exploring their own.
Come ready to move, learn, laugh, and maybe leave with a little more sparkle than you arrived with 💖

In this workshop, we will:
• Practice Performing and build dance skills
• Create and deepen our own drag practices
• Reflect on how our ancestors influence our art and indigenous perspectives on drag and gender.

We acknowledge that Indigenous peoples have had expensive perspectives on gender that existed long before our current ideas about gender identity. From the revered two-spirit people of Turtle Island, to the Bakla of the Philippines, and the Mahu of Hawai’i — these identities represent rich, spiritual and resilient lineages of wisdom. These are not forms of drag; they are foundational, distinct expressions of cultural expression and understanding.

The workshop then celebrates drag as a powerful, cultural tool: it is scholarship, ritual, resistance, inheritance, and personal expression. Drag, in this context, is understood as performance that draws upon these histories to become more than entertainment. It is ceremony, storytelling, and culture in motion. Drag is love.

Come and join in practices and conversation to remix, reclaim, and reimagine drag in the ways that mainstream might never show you. It’s where tradition meets innovation, where joy becomes resistance, and where our histories come alive on our own terms. by @joegoodeperformancegroup

Behind the Pages 📖✨

Join us for an intimate evening with Joe as he reads a new chapter from his upcoming book on the creative process—part reflection, part storytelling, part invitation into the mind behind the work.

Last April, 50 friends and fans gathered at Clio’s in Oakland for a lyrical, moving glimpse into making art in the Castro during a time of both promise and fear. This February, we turn the page.
