Introducing Joe Hodway @joehodway Joe Hodway (B. Dubai, 1974) is son of a British Mercenary and a teacher of Iraqi origin. He has lived in the MiddleEast, Europe, and SouthEast Asia absorbing many of the stylistic and spiritual elements seen in his work. He is interested in how we relate to the wider universe from physical and metaphysical perspectives. Combining elements from historical memento mori painting, sacred geometry, with cosmological and quantum science, Joe’s work responds to the cyclical and fractal relationships between time, space, energy, matter, attraction, repulsion, life, death, and our pluralistic perceptions of them. Using almost exclusively paint salvaged from post consumer sources, he champions sustainable methodologies, aiming to provide reproducible models for responsible art production. 10% of all his sales proceeds are donated to environmental charities. I am delighted to be exhibiting a somewhat uncharacteristic piece at this year’s EAL Exhibition, which opens at The Copeland Gallery tomorrow. If you are lucky enough to make it to the show, you’ll almost certainly have to look at the label to identify it as one of mine - as the style and media are not what I am commonly known for. Experimenting with more ways to transform post-consumer paint into different formats - in this case - a durable solid. This experiment was born of exasperation with a current slowly progressing project; using salvaged emulsion paints to create a life size bust of the Aphrodite of Milos (A.K.A. Venus de Milo) attributed to Alexandros of Milos. The goal is to repurpose these paints, and divert them from polluting landfill and dioxin generating incineration onto a more beneficial path. They are being transmuted through the alchemy of art into relics of the future. Just as archaeologists learn about past civilisations from what they leave behind, future generations will have to contend with what we, and our current civilisation is producing and discarding now. I hope my work inspires us to reevaluate the potential of the things we consider ‘rubbish’, because what we throw away, doesn’t go away. We are just as responsible for the pollution generated by the manufacturing and disposal of the products we buy, as the companies that produce them. It is our demand that gives manufacturers the justification to make them. Jabbering on about my sustainable artwork The Heptad on display at The London Group Open at The Copeland Gallery. The exhibition runs every day until Sunday 23rd November and is well worth a visit. Work in progress. This will take a while, and it is very unlikely you will see any of this colour in the final piece - if it works... After 15 layers of hand applied paint, the surface is only about 0.08mm thick - and very delicate. The plan is to make this sculpture into a solid form composed entirely from salvaged post consumer paint - so other additives are pretty much off the menu. Alas you can’t apply the paint in thick layers as a skin forms on the top, which prevents the liquid paint below from drying. I have started ‘pre-drying’ some paints by leaving the lids off the cans to reduce the moisture content before it is applied. This won’t solve the skinning issue, so it will still have to be applied in thin coats, but it should allow each coat to dry faster, so the layers can be applied slightly less slowly. I love the way our brains sometimes invert what they see to make things more familiar - as demonstrated by the apparently ‘positive’ form in the video. (Actually they do it all the time! Our eyes actually see the world upside down, and our brains flip it 180° to help us make sense of it.) The limitations and distortions of our perception in relation to understanding identity is a recurrent theme in my work. I genuinely can’t get enough of exploring it. Why salvaged post-consumer paint, and not something more conducive for 3D forms? Just as we discover archeological relics of bygone civilisations, future generations will be unearthing our rubbish and pollution. My work aims to divert the pollution of discarded paints from landfill and transmute it through the alchemy of art into incarnations that are more productive and purposeful. By using pre-existing materials, I am also doing what I can to reduce the production and consumption of virgin resources, with the associated carbon and pollution generated by their extraction and processing. #inthestudio #inthestudiotoday taken in Thames-Side Studios by @joehodway

How to make a silicone mould in 60 seconds. (5 full days work.) This mould is for the full size version of The Relic of the Future. It will be a life size bust of the Venus de Milo, composed entirely from salvaged post consumer paint. The 30 cm high maquette took over two and a half months of daily paint applications to reach a thickness of just 6mm - the thickness necessary for it to attain the necessary robustness to support its own weight without collapsing, or breaking when handled. Even at that thickness it slumped somewhat once removed from its mould, before fully setting in its misshapen form. For this version I will be using a combination of matt emulsions for their fast drying times - to build up the thickness, and vinyl based silk finish emulsions for their flexibility and durability, which (at least partially) offsets the fragile and crumbly properties of the matt paints. I expect this substantially larger version will take about a year to complete!
