Little Church (For Katsuhiro Otomo)

So Katsuhiro Otomo likes Miles Davis, at least enough to name a short early manga after ‘Round About Midnight. When I knew that and after I always imagined starker, blown out versions of Akira destruction set to spacier tracks from the album Live Evil. So I made this. It’s a few hundred frames from Akira selected and redrawn in sequence to highlight the motion of annihilated things (and not highlight how well I could draw things accurately).

Malick Sidibé was a photographer from Mali whose work rules. He started his career photographing nightlife and music / dance events and was featured heavily at a show at the museum a few years ago. He would sell "chemises", lil' portfolios of snapshots taken at different spots turned around next day in some cases and advertised to folks who attended the show or party where they were taken. These are all from one such chemise the library just acquired, from a night photographing the Al Capone nightclub in Bamako in late December 1963. by @joelalanp
