There I go again,
thinking that love must be a friend,
when it has proven time and time again
to be a thief.

Charming in pursuit and sly at the root,
it paints the illusion of a giver—peace, happiness,
a thrilling, magical mystery ride.
Then suddenly, the illusion fades into a whirlwind of shame,
looks at me with disdain,
and places on my head a crown of thorns.

A thief indeed—it has stolen the mask of the person I pretend to be.
It has unveiled my weaknesses, stripped me of pride,
and all I intended to hide.

Love does not offer special attention;
it surveys and surveils.
This thief has mocked the likeness of my countenance
and plastered it onto canvas.

Is this how you perceive me?
Surely you must illuminate my scars—
my silenced voice and weary eyes?
Instead, love paints shades of the deepest hues,
vibrant and true.

Serene, harmonious strokes,
whispering earth tones aglow.
Love sees me for all that I am
and all that I am not.
It takes my shame and covers me with grace.
It offers endless patience
and becomes my salvation.

Love places my head upon its chest
and gives me a home to rest.
A thief of all that was meant to shame,
love is an unassailable accomplice of divinity—
and I hope to meet it once again,
not in my mother nor my father,
but in a lover—
someone I can call my friend. by @joelcdyson

NOLA Family Magazine has served the greater New Orleans area for over a decade and is the only parenting publication in our community.

I can remember visiting my GYN for a routine check-up in 2013 and noticing a NOLA Family publication on the coffee table. I decided to browse through it and I’m so glad I did. I learned so much about resources available to our community, local businesses, parenting tips and marveled at how wonderful and informative this magazine was. Several years later, my company is presented as the Face of Camps! So excited, proud, humbled and all the things 🎉

Thanks, NOLA Family Magazine! ♥️ by @joelcdyson

“It took many years of vomiting up all the filth I’d been taught about myself, and half-believed, before I was able to walk on the earth as though I had a right to be here.” - James Baldwin

Words cannot express the visceral sensations I felt walking into Carnegie Hall. My heartbeat began to race walking to my dressing room and seeing my name mounted on my door. Tears of joy, disbelief and gratitude overwhelmed me immensely. To grace the same stage many phenomenal artists have stood: Sissieretta Jones, Marian Anderson, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holliday to name a few was mind blowing. To be added amongst the few artists, Black, female, classical singers from Louisiana was and still is astonishing and historic. I am honestly in awe of God and am extremely humbled…

My deepest thanks to each of you who sent words of congratulations and encouragement. I truly appreciate your kindness and support! by @joelcdyson

Whew! What a journey and yet somehow, I always find a way to think “we’re just getting started” but I’m taking time out to STOP, PAUSE, and REFLECT on how much BTS and CAMP ART has grown over the last 6 years.

1 thing that is constant is the support of my mother. She’s there no matter what. This lady car was in the shop the last two weeks of camp and she caught the bus on days I couldn’t pick her up. Thank you mama, I love you. This lady holds me up and down. @robindyson12

Thank you to @chivalocacomedy who took up the task of Site and Operations Management. I know this was not an easy task, but you did it! I’m so proud of you and immensely thankful not only for the means and opportunity to hire for this role, but to be able to hire a friend. An investment well worth it.

Thankful to our counselors from the Mayor’s office. Not everyone is pictured, but Erin and Josiah went above and beyond. Josiah even scored a part-time remote job with BTS this fall.

And finally, massive thanks to our special guest panelists and all of our incredibly talented instructors for their time, hard work, and commitment to shaping the next generation of creative thinkers and leaders. While I didn’t picture everyone — my heart posture remains the same — THANK YOU♥️.

CAMP ART YEAR 6 officially signing out. It’s been a blast.

Now, it’s time to take the entire month of August off to reset and finish strategizing the next fiscal season. 💫

Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving.

When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape. 🫶🏽

Thankful above all.

Late nights at lounges opting for coffee in lieu of alcohol resulted in a 59.5% increase in enrollment and a 57.2% in revenue.

Before Session 2 of CAMP ART begins, little miss sunshine deserves some play. 🪩

My good friend Michael at @downmansounds referred me as a vocal coach and ultimately brought me on to assist with vocal producing and arranging for a client’s recording. The client asked if I could do some BGVs and it was soooooo much fun! I haven’t been in the studio in a long time, but some places, things, and people will always feel like home — pure peace and unspeakable joy. 🫶🏽

Thanks, Michael! 🎨 by @joelcdyson

Built programs, managed people, grew revenue… and somehow finished an MBA too. Simultaneously the case study and the student. Safe to say, “MASTERED IT🎉🎓”
