“oh sh—?! lands”
i took it to the limit after getting home from lollapalooza, i figured why not go to the local festival with almost all of the same bands. i love music, but how much is too much really? on a regular day i love to be in the park so whatever, i’ll jam a lil bit.

i got into this festival for free, but i bought the $50 lobster roll with my hard earned money just like everybody else… please subscribe online or buy the awesome physical magazine on my website

thank u - joel magazine

turnstile
★★★★★
idk how these guys do it but they make the whole place go boom. literally looked like we were in dusty mexico at a metal festival or under the macarthur maze at that crazy thing that happened and not at the sleepy deepy osl. i’ve seen them a lot and they get better every time, kinda legendary era ngl. shoutout to jake, he got me my wristband and for that we give turnstile 5 big stars

djo
★★★
i was walking out of the backstage area, leaving the festival and i noticed that i was walking next to joe and his band. i said hey and shook his hand, he seemed nice, idk i bet his set was awesome. 3 stars!

clipse
★★★★
my friend of a friend got me into this gig, thank you for that bradley. clipse at the independent was incredible. they played for like 30 minutes, which in my opinion is the perfect set length, i fist bumped pusha t, what more could you ask for? 4 star night

sierra ferrell
★★★★½
thank god for sierra ferrell. she gets up there on that punk rocker stage and shows everybody how to do it. with a full circus tent and a poofy clown costume you might think that something funny was about to happen, but it was actually downright spiritual whimsical magic and she’s got a great voice! great sh—, we love her 4 and a half stars.

die spitz
★★★½
these girls sound like metallica but awesome? i had only heard about this band the other day and wanted to see it live before i made any judgement. i love that outside lands has embraced the rocker contingency, hopefully they converted some normies n techies and edm heads and all that. 3 and a half stars

the smashing pumpkins

★★★½

being in a field of tens of thousands of people watching billy corgan’s microphone not work reminded me that we’re all not so different. even at the most massive hometown headline show of your life, we’re all susceptible to the same faulty equipment or the error of some front of house engineer or maybe billy just didn’t turn the mic on. one of the most salient moments of the weekend. what a gift to be a festival concert attendee.

hot mulligan

★★★½

the name and band hot mulligan confounded the average lollapalooza enjoyer. anyone i brought up them up to was like “what?”. banking on that vibe these guys gave the most disruptive and nasty little set. yelping and thrashing and stirring up the whole place. it was nice to see some boys on the big stage who did not give a f—.

the story so far

★★★★

story played a house of blues after show that was pretty wild, i am avalanche opened up, which was awesome. story effortlessly got up there and f—ed the whole place up. kinda amazing how they can just stand up there and thousands of people explode into chaos. also seeing them a week later at outside lands was special, a real dub for the dub c

nettspend

★★½

i saw nettspend riding on the back of a golf cart with 20-30 entourage of large men crammed on other golf carts. the juxtapositional irony was peak artist statement. much love to the young legend.

finn wolfhard

★★★

i was trying to get a tambourine from the stage rental guy and finn was playing some tunes, i couldn’t really give it my full attention because we were yelling over his indie rock to get the gear. i’m just happy he’s not making more aggressive music, otherwise i don’t know if i would’ve gotten what i needed. thanks finn

water from your eyes

★★★★½

a rock band deconstructing what you expect music to be live in real time. in a sea of bands jamming to mainly backtracks in straightforward time signatures, it’s a breath of fresh air to hear some weird sh—. there were a few hundreds of onlookers watching the stage wide eyed and confused, i’m not sure if they could digest what they were hearing but they were captivated until the end. so beautiful i could cry

rain, mud, sun, sweat and a bunch of crazy mfs.

i went to lollapalooza for all 4 days so that you didn’t have to.

joel magazine LOLLAPALOOZA’D reporting is made possible by readers like you. be sure to buy the physical magazine which i ship out monthly and is awesome. you can also subscribe on substack for the digital weekly song round up, art and lifestyle articles. much love!

geese
★★★★

this band is real bad in a real beautiful way. in the modern age this is a weapon against all that ai crap. real salt of the earth jammy jams from the nyc tradition of patty smith and sonic youth. you’re not supposed to just like it. you gotta earn it a little bit. suffer through some noise and strangeness and scratchiness. i don’t get the hype because usually this is a band that just i would like lol i’m happy to share the crowd with thousands of normies and frat boys, all ships rise kinda thing for weirdo music. also shout out their agents carly and greg, amazing work. four stars

ethel cain
★★★★

$30,000 of flowers on stage, come on now. hayden and the ethel cain rockers blew the damn doors down. after a ton of rain turned the festival grounds into festival muds, we were brought into the flori-bama ethereal swampiness of the ethel cain-iverse. hard not to love the aesthetic fully realized, and then the songs are as good as t swift. lets go. shout out my friend brandon their new guitar tech, he did a great job lol four stars

suki waterhouse
★★★½

after leaving the fest i rolled to the house of blues for the love spells and suki waterhouse gig. i was tm for the artist love spells who are awesome, real life young rockstar legends in the making. their set won the crowd over and got house of blues cozied up for mr. waterhouse. suki came on stage with full stage production which was a kind taken in Redhot Ranch by @joelcherrytree
