August through the 16:9 eye of the Lumix by @joelsanchez_carn

Memories from the Konkuk University International Summer School 2026 (Seoul, Korea).

It’s difficult to articulate how personally significant this trip has been for me. In many ways, I believe that July 2026 has been the most important month of my life (so far!) and I’m so very grateful to all the people who helped make it that way.

Incredibly grateful to have the privilege of directing an orchestra filled with so many of the most wonderful people and musicians I know. Our maiden performance was a resounding success, and I am so grateful to my amazing co-director @max_irvin22 and the 19 amazing musicians that comprise this orchestra for their passion, enthusiasm and joy in getting this outstanding new ensemble on its feet! Stay tuned for more ;) by @joelsanchez_carn

SYMPHONIC ROCK 2025 - THE MICHAEL KAMEN GUITAR CONCERTO

In late November, I had the incredible opportunity to perform the Australian premiere of a movement from Michael Kamen’s Concerto for Electric Guitar with the @qldcon Symphony Orchestra as the featured soloist for our inaugural 2025 Symphonic Rock concert.

At the risk of sounding garrulous, I need to acknowledge that the journey to get this piece from the practice room to the stage was nothing short of massive; aside from the inevitably intense learning and audition stages, there was a months-long series of onerous and extensive copyright/legal issues for both myself and the Conservatorium’s legal team and library to contend with. This was a saga that eventually left me with the Sisyphean task of, by ear, transcribing every single orchestral part in this movement, note-for-note (that’s a total of over 37,000 notes, all up!).

Given the outrageous odds that were stacked against us all throughout 2025, it is a small miracle that we got to premiere this outstanding work. That we did at all is a real testament to the resilience and tenacity of so, so many people who selflessly believed in both me and my musicality, and the deeply emotional and transcendental quality of Michael Kamen’s composition.

There is a veritable laundry list of people to thank for the performance and production itself (most of which I have thanked at great length), but most pertinently to this Instagram post, I am very grateful to:

@kyonosukes_photos for the stunning shots of the performance, and @museleebar @abbiedrums @radithyabudi and @johanna_ide for the footage;

@sophiaadilucchio and @jo_pestorius for their sage advice on attire;

and last (but not least)! @hilarydavis761, for an incredible pro bono preshow hairstyling session!

Symphonic Rock was a night and performance I’ll never forget. It was undoubtedly the highlight of my 2025, and I am so, so, so satisfied and grateful that I could ultimately share it with everyone!
