In Judaism, the “Book of Life” is a metaphorical record of deeds where God inscribes names for the coming year, with a final decision sealed on Yom Kippur. Starting on Rosh Hashanah, God opens this book, and through the Ten Days of Repentance, individuals can influence their fate by engaging in repentance and charity Yom Kippur is the day the gates of heaven close, at which point the judgment is sealed, and the phrase “May you be inscribed in the Book of Life” is a common greeting and blessing for Yom Kippur. This is a sacred time for introspection, spiritual renewal, and repentance, during which individuals are encouraged to mend relationships, seek forgiveness from others, and prepare for God’s judgment and the sealing of their fate for the coming year. The period is dedicated to deep personal reflection and an ethical and religious reassessment of one’s life and deeds from the past year.
