When I think about what goes into making a life, I think about how much I was able to fit into a decade or two. This photo is from fourteen years ago, a few short years into meeting Wendy and moving to Williamsburg and founding Brooklyn Arts Press, putting out work by writers and artists I found interesting. You can fit whole lifetimes in a decade, easily, which is what I tell folks wondering if they can start creating art later in life, or feel their time has past. Prioritize what you love and you can find a place for yourself and your work in the community. It's not easy, and it takes real work, but there are more outlets now than ever before, and folks on the lookout for new voices with unique experiences and unexpected ways of seeing. by @joepanwrites

Yeah, I started writing a whole humorous post about how maudlin it is to celebrate getting on a Best Of list, but f**k it this is awesome.

CrimeReads is a big deal to me. It's LitHub's sister publication that focuses on Crime, Mystery, and Thrillers, often with a literary bent. I'm also super psyched my buddy Lucas Schaefer is on this list, alongside new friend Amran Gowani.

Florida Palms took 20 yrs to write and publish. And I get to celebrate this with my mom in town. I'm so grateful.

There’s a New York Joe’s Pizza in Harvard Square now, and a Joe Pan in the New York Times Book Review, both delighting in unexpected places.

Today the universe let me know we made the right move back to NYC by having Lin-Manuel Miranda return my wave as the Naked Cowboy strummed a tune before me like my own personal one-man band. I also wildly overpaid for Greek yogurt in a diner. by @joepanwrites

Big thanks to San Diego Book Festival for having me! With a special shout-out to David Washburn from KPBS for moderating the Q&A.

Met a lot of great people and signed a lot of books. Plus, got to visit my old friend Cody Petterson from back in the Iowa Workshop days, and hung out with a bookstore cat, which are the coolest cats aside from bodega cats.

To add more to the Odyssey conversation, here's a poem from my last poetry book told from a dog's perspective: son of Argos, Ulysses' faithful canine companion. Nolan had his own take, but in the poem Argos died when Ulysses refused to recognize him, lest Ulysses be outted among the suitors he planned to kill. In this imagining, Son of Argos is not thrilled with having Ulysses back home.

Imagine a dog speaking it...

I visit a lot of bookstores driving around the country, but Green Hand Books in Portland, Maine, has the best paperback horror section I’ve seen. Thanks for having us!

Mentioned with Colson Whitehead in the same sentence is nice. A Best Book of July is nice. Paperback of FLORIDA PALMS out in one week is nice.
