My book The Shifting Ground recently got glowing reviews from both @the_comics_journal_ and Ryan’s 4 Color Apocalypse — within the same week, which felt totally surreal.

After spending a year making it, then self-publishing and pushing it out for 7-ish months, these were the first real public responses beyond kind words from friends or folks at shows. Theres a sequence in the book that literally explores the gap between artist intent and public interpretation — so seeing thoughtful writers engage with it on that level was a trip.

I’m honored they took the time, and that they thought it was worth sharing. This is the first thing I’ve made on my own that I can fully embrace and stand behind, so having people go to bat for it means a lot.

Of course, like any artist, I have complicated feelings about reviews and I’m sure I’ll be annoyed when someone inevitably hates it. But for now? It’s just really cool to know people are reading it.

New sign for @shakeitrecords

If it wasn’t clear from the last sign I made for them THEY HAVE BOOKS IN THE BASEMENT!

It was fun doing a portrait of Shake its book-buying wizard Joe Kuth @prestidigitonium78 watching over the basement of books. Joe also picked out a list of his favorite paperback book covers which I printed to use in the sign.

Many thanks to Shake it for the opportunity and to the legendary Justin Green (rest in peace) for bequeathing me the sign man gig which has led to multiple of my favorite sign projects! This sign is a direct reference to a sign of Justin’s that used to hang in the same spot advertising Vinyl (which used to only be in the basement back in the CD heyday!).

I had a lot of fun on this one and tried a lot of new methods to handle the fact that it would be hanging from the ceiling (aka it couldn’t weigh 100 lbs).

(From Joe) To follow up on yesterday’s announcement: I’m incredibly grateful to receive the 2026 Make More Comics Grant. It means a lot to know that the work was selected from such a large and talented group, especially by judges who are deeply engaged with comics and know what they’re looking at.

I’m honored to have found the joyous outlet that is making comics, it feels like the first true amalgam of all the disparate interests and attempts that I made before it. I’m excited to make more and more and more.

Grants like this, and the implied sharing and embracing of my work among the judges, make me feel like I’ve found and been accepted into another little hallway in the maze of a comics career. Or, better put, a life in comics.

I’m very excited to use this support to continue The Shifting Ground and bring Volume 2 into the world. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I’m also teaming up with @powerpulpcomics to help with distribution of book 2! Excited to explore that partnership.

Ps: I’m shooting for this year’s CXC @cartooncrossroads (mid April) as the deadline for Vol. 2. Fingers Crossed! (Gotta apply and get in and finish the book first) taken in Cincinnati by @joewalsh.studio

Congratulations to this year's Make More Comics Grantee @joewalsh.studio!

Joe Walsh is a multimedia artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio. His (first) self-published comic The Shifting Ground Vol. 1 was featured in The Comics Journal’s Best of 2025 and reviewed positively by The Comics Journal, Ryan’s Four Color Apocalypse, and Living the Line. In addition to comics, Walsh works across printmaking, animation, and freelance design/illustration. His animation work for the documentary film Why We Walk earned him an Ohio Arts Council individual excellence award in 2023. This year's grant will help Joe bring The Shifting Ground Vol. 2 to life.

Upon learning he was the winner of the 2026 grant, Joe said, "It means a lot to know I was selected from such a large and talented group. I saw that you took extra time to pick a winner this year, which made me nervous! I’m honored to have found the joyous outlet that is making comics. It feels like the first true amalgam of all the disparate interests and attempts that I made before it. I’m excited to make more and more and more."

Power Pulp is thrilled to include Joe as the latest addition to its self-publishing collective and distribution model. Power Pulp was established to bring this corner of the comics industry to the forefront and showcase the best of the best. Joe Walsh clearly fits the bill. Keep your eyes on @powerpulpcomics for more info.

This was a challenging year. From first-time cartoonists to Eisner and Harvey nominees, this was the largest and most diverse group of proposals we have ever received. Our judges (@dummyzine, @corinnehalbert, @rachelmasilamani1002, and @omgcow) had their work cut out for them, but they were able to sort through everything during a series of tremendous discussions (intermixed with long periods of reading and decision-making!) I am extremely grateful to them for all of their time and expertise in making this year a success.

To all of you who applied, we are thankful for you as well. The art that you create is worthy of great support. Let us know when your work is published! We will be more than happy to direct our audience to it!

Dolly Parton portrait I did for the sign at @shakeitrecords from a few years back. She was incredible and did a lot of good. I often listen to her version on “Do I ever cross your mind” with Chet Atkins.

Covers for @thesilkies new album “There you have it. Lasting peace.”

All drawings done with dip pen and hand cut halftones + digital color. This was a very fun project, it’s always a treat to get client work that uses the exact same tools/ mediums that I love to use in my comics/ personal work. The band was also very open to my ideas and I basically could do whatever I wanted, which we love. It was also fun to do my take on the “are ya winning son?” Meme for a song about losing/ruining your life on the internet.

The Shifting Ground has made it to Alaska! Now available at @boscoscomics

My cousin Brett was born and raised in Alaska and I visited a few times as a kid. He would take me to Bosco’s and we’d get comics, I never understood that they might have a comic shop in Cincinnati and I re-read those comics over and over again like they were precious souvenirs of the land up north.. anyway full circle moment! Go get em Alaska. ALSO Brett is getting married today, so I’m up here again. 🫎 🏔️ taken in Anchorage, Alaska by @joewalsh.studio

Illustrated history of ArtWorks - which just changed its name to @1001colors - pen and colored inks on a big ol piece of paper. Hard to convey on this tiny screen, go see it at the 1001 colors headquarters in Walnut Hills.

@jasonsnell made a cool video with elements from the piece which premiered as part of the launch of the new identity.

(Formerly) ArtWorks was my first (and second and third etc.) job and my work with them led me to meet many friends and collaborators who are still a part of my life to this day.

This is the third illustrated timeline I’ve done for the headquarters on Gilbert. The other two were histories of the previous companies that inhabited the building before them. This one was much more complex, telling a long story spanning many different projects and a city wide story. It was a fun challenge and kind of felt like I made a whole book by the end of it.

DOUBLES - May 30th at General Store - An image-making workshop exploring collaboration as means to play, think and see differently, making chance essential.

We’ll start by reviewing the work we make within our collaborative practice, Take A Moment, the processes we utilize, and the why its value is important to our individual practices.

After that, pairs of two will set out to build images using paper mask screen printing and drawing that feel cohesive and complete. Participants are encouraged to stay loose in approach, give in to chance in the process, and make as many images (posters) as they can with the time given. We’ll be assisting to print students’ stencils, rack & dry prints, and advise on supplied drawing materials & techniques.

Sign up with a friend/collaborator, or sign up solo and get paired with a new friend! Make chance essential :)

Students will get to leave with all their work from the studio, 18 x 24” posters. How it’s divided between collaborators is up to you!

No experience necessary. Materials provided.
