August 1st, 2026 - Black Belt

Man, I have spent the last few days really trying to think about what to say after 10 long, tumultuous, exciting, fatiguing, happy and joyous years of training and now teaching in this sport, and I realized it boiled down to one thing - all of you. My coach, the coaches I’ve met along the way, my teammates, my opponents, my students, my friends and myself. The single greatest thing this sport has ever given to me is relationships and how to build them. The jiu-jitsu world spins solely off of how much love and respect those partaking in it, put into it. My goal to training was leave it better than I found it. Be the best teammate you could be. Be the best student you could be. Be the best coach you can be. Be the best person you can be.

PJ, my brother. I cannot express my gratitude for you over these years. To have received all my belts from just you these years is an honor and a testament to our lifelong friendship and student to Coach bond. I remember you and I were in spring valley many years ago, just us on the mats, and I said “Imagine a day where you have your own spot, with tons of students. That could be us one day.” Now that imagination has become a reality. I am nothing but a product of you and the environment in which you’ve created. The lessons you’ve taught, the decisions you make, the times you’ve been there have never gone unnoticed, nor unappreciated.

Being promoted alongside someone like Dave was a true honor. I think he’s easily one of the best grapplers, coaches and all-around people in the entire world. Someone I look up to and respect so much, to then be promoted alongside you is something I’ll never forget.

To my students who were promoted as well, you are the heart in which beats throughout our 4 walls. The things that ties us all together. I cannot begin to fathom the words of how proud I am of you, our team, our future and our community. “Beyond mountains are more mountains.”

So now, I’m not sure where this promotion will take me, but I know as long as I have those around me near, there isn’t a doubt I won’t be able to reach the highest peaks and stretch the longest distances.
