Krabi, solo: missed the last longtail back and stayed on the sand instead. The sky did the rest.

Is solo travel common? In a big old Budapest café I counted eleven tables for one out of maybe thirty. Nobody was staring. They were busy enjoying it.

I stayed twenty minutes after everyone left, and the sky went pink and purple behind the palms.

Do you leave at sunset or stay?

Empty beach on Phuket? Yes, if you know where and when to go.

Mai Khao north of the airport, Freedom Beach by boat or trail, Ya Nui before 9 am. Boats to the hidden coves mostly run December to May, so plan around the season.

How to make friends travelling alone in Tbilisi, without a single app.

Guesthouse kitchens are the easiest start. A time and a place beats « we should hang out ». The walk up to Narikala Fortress works well.

Is it weird to travel alone? Abu Dhabi gave me my answer.

Border questions are routine when you travel solo, so keep your hotel address and return date handy. Then go find your view. Mine was the Grand Mosque in the afternoon light.

Mount Etna day trip from Catania: what I’d tell you before you go.

Fog can sit on the top for hours, then lift in minutes. If you come up by bus, you have the whole day, so there’s no reason to rush back down. Bring water and snacks for the walk.

My first day in New York, I could have drawn you every crossing light. Not one rooftop.

Day two I turned it into a game: ten blocks, one look up at every corner, count what I’d missed. I stopped counting at eleven. A carved face over a doorway. A water tower sitting on a roof. A window box full of tomatoes, six floors up.

It works best on a long avenue in the morning, when the light hits the top floors first and the pavements are still calm.

Save this for your first walk in New York, or send it to the friend who always walks looking at their phone.

Nobody tells you how quiet it is in there.

Go in the late afternoon, when the white marble starts turning gold and the courtyard cools down a little. The dress code is strict: cover arms and legs.

The best navigation app in Thailand is a person.
The small roads on Ko Pha-Ngan change faster than the maps do, especially the dirt tracks to the quieter beaches.

Ride slow, wear a helmet, and stop at a stall before you’re completely lost.

What’s the funniest wrong turn you’ve ever taken?
