#practicegram LAST TUNA

For my last tuna I decided to post the whole song cause why not, this is a song called “Flower Shops” by Morgan Wallen and ERNEST.

Finals week, concert week, it’s been a rough one so I decided to pick something with an easily identifiable chord, and what better music for that than country

Thursday @ 3:00pm in my dorm, I spent some time listening and finding the overall chord structure in the fret board, playing everything in root position temporarily

Friday @ 3:00pm in my dorm, after my music business final I listened to the way each chord was picked or strummed in order to play it more accurately, and it used a picking style that I am already familiar with, lucky me

Saturday @ 11am in my dorm before my business final, needed to destress and take my mind off of studying so I attempted to find the inversions of the chords that were played and what fingerings worked best

Sunday @ 7:00 in my dorm after all concerts were done, I played a few runs of the song to get comfortable with playing with the recording.

Monday @ 11:30am in my dorm I played until I got a good run and until my fingers hurt, I need to play more because that didn’t take long

Overall I had fun, learned a good song, and I’ll miss doing these for class, maybe I’ll post more on my own, we’ll see… by @joeyspracticesessions

Tuesday: 2:00pm in my dorm on my pan I started by listening to each sang note and found it on the pan (sorry Kolker I forgot it after our lesson)

Thursday: 2:30pm in my dorm on my pan, just trying to remember the notes and how they relate to the recording

Sunday: 7:30pm in my dorm@on my pan, practiced the beginning until I was confident and recorded a slower run

Overall fun tune, and reminds me of my time at SōSi which I really enjoyed so this was a good project by @joeyspracticesessions

Monday: 7:00pm in my dorm on my pan, I stuck and matched each note with my voice on each chord to match the correct intonation with the instrument.

Tuesday 3:00pm in my dorm on my pan, I practiced playing through each chord, then singing, then playing and singing

Wednesday: 7:00 in my dorm on my pan, practiced singing with the drone and playing with the drone

Saturday: 4:00pm in my dorm on my pan I practiced the written instructions until my voice matched decently well.

Sunday: 8:00pm practiced everything I had done throughout the week and recorded a solid run

Overall, still not a fan of singing, don’t know how accurate my intonation was but I tried. by @joeyspracticesessions

Monday: 7:00pm in my dorm on steel pan, read through half the scales, just to get a sense for the positioning on the circle of 5ths

Tuesday: 3:00pm in my dorm on the pan, read through the other half of the scales to see their position on the circle.

Friday: 5:00pm in my dorm on my pan, read through the whole sheet for a rough take to work on sight reading.

Saturday: 9:00pm in my dorm on my pan, read through the sheet again and checked for wrong notes and accuracy.

Sunday: 8:00pm I recorded a run of each scale and spliced it together.

Overall I don’t like the way these scales sounded, so it was very discomforting to play but I think I did ok with them. by @joeyspracticesessions

#practicegram Tuna week

My Tuna the week was “Arabesque 1” by Claude Debussy

Monday: 11:45am 116 right after music theory I listened to the piece and picked apart a few notes just to get a start on the tune

Tuesday: 8:30am in 116 played around with the second arpeggio and struggled a bit to find it.

Wednesday: 7:00pm in my dorm on my iPad, garage band, I listened to the tune slower to really dissect the notes better.

Thursday: 8:30am in 116 actually applying the notes to the keyboard

Sunday, I played with the slowed track and gradually got faster until I couldn’t do it anymore and then played it at the tempo that I could consistently keep up with

Overall was not too crazy the runs really helped me with accuracy training. by @joeyspracticesessions

#PracticeGram number 8

Tuesday: 12:00pm EST, on the plane to TX on my iPad, in garage band, I did not take any videos on the plane or in Texas because of the background noise and my practices were at weird times, but I felt pretty ok with this exercise I started to focus more on how each mode relates to the key, and how to be able to quickly move from one scale to the next based on that.

Wednesday: 9:00pm Central in my hotel room on my iPad in garage band, I did the same thing where I was just trying to move quicker and quicker, which was getting better bud still tough on the iPad.

Thursday: 11:00pm Central, in the hotel room after eating a whole dominos pepperoni pizza because I was sad that the women’s team lost, I was running through some more of the keys focusing more on the transitions.

Friday: 12:00pm Central, on the plane ride home after making terrible music on garage band because I got destructed I finally got through the rest of the scales and the transitions were smoother.

Sunday: 9:00pm EST, in my dorm on my steel pan I ran the scales slowly to see where they were on the circle of 4ths and 5ths.

Overall a pretty good week other than the sadness of having to Leave Texas but I’ll be able to put a lot more effort into next weeks practice gram now that I’m home. by @joeyspracticesessions

#practicegram number 7

My phone has been acting up and this took way too long for me to load into an editor but I want to get this in ASAP because I’m already past the deadline so here’s what my phone would let me post

Overall I need more time with these because this was the hardest lesson for me to learn in Hs and it still isn’t quite sticking

Tuesday: 3:00 in my dorm; sight red notes on the steel pan, just wanted to do a pass just to get it under my hands

Wednesday: 8:00 in hallway of HFAC; did some fast run through on vibes in hopes of understanding the muscles movements and interval spacing in my mallets

Thursday: 5:00 before Jazz in 116; did a quick run through on marimba of these and got cleaner runs but still some dirt

Saturday, 3:00 in my dorm; tried it on pan again for fun, way hard, should keep going tho so I can get better technique by @joeyspracticesessions

#practicegram 6 here’s a couple clips from me sight reading this week

Monday: dorm, 7pm sight reading out of the Cirrone book on my pad

Tuesday: 5pm before Jazz, sight read a Jazz chart for fresh picked on the drum kit

Wednesday: 9pm in 116 sight reading spotty sections of the third movement of my marimba solo

Thursday: 9pm in 116 sight reading spotty sections of Stardust on the vibes

Sunday: 2pm in 116 sight reading some of a packet I was given from Prof. Kolker on marimba

Overall, I’m still not good at sight reading but I am seeing improvement, I’m going to need more time with it… a lot more time by @joeyspracticesessions

#practicegram Tuna week 2 this week I learned the solo from Toto’s “I Won’t Hold You Back”

Monday: 6:00 in my dorm - I sat listening to the song a few times and sat with it for a bit before I picked up the guitar

Tuesday: 9:00 in my dorm - I used my ears to hear the tuning of the guitar along with the song in the background (it’s harder than it sounds)

Wednesday: 6:00 in my dorm - I started slowing down the song and finding the correct pitches in relation to string and bend techniques

Thursday: 6:00 in my dorm - Finalized learning the notes and slowly speeding up the song and playing with it

Friday: 7:00 in my dorm - I worked with my amp to find a similar tone so the guitars didn’t sound too different and then I spent the rest of the time recording it

Overall this helped me get back into learning the bending technique and I feel more comfortable on guitar again by @joeyspracticesessions

#practicegram week V

This week I ran through I🔺7 - ii-7 - V7 - I7 chord progressions in all 12 keys

Monday - 6:00 - my dorm - writing out all of the arpeggios to get my mind prepped for playing

Wednesday - 6:00 -in my dorm playing through each key slowly on the steel pan getting familiar with the notes

Thursday - 5:00 - in 116 before Jazz I used a sticking pattern that I learned in my lessons to challenge my self with each chord (as shown in the video)

Saturday - 3:00 - in my dorm playing through notes on the steel pan to refamiliarise myself

Sunday - 7:15 - in 116 after orchestra I did a full run through all keys, wouldn’t let me post the full video

Final thoughts: I need to work more on the transition between keys, remembering intervals while playing and working more on slow practice with the sticking by @joeyspracticesessions

#practicegram week 4

Gonna be honest this week wasn’t the best

I honestly only practiced 3 days out of 5 I was really struggling to find time with keyboards and have been burrows in assignments

I practiced Wednesday in 116 @ 8:00am, Thursday in 116 @ 8:00am, and Sunday in my dorm at 5:30pm

During those times I mainly focused on my ensemble and solo literature, but was able to squeeze in an ok amount of time with this weeks pray tics gram, on the keyboard it felt pretty good and came pretty quickly so I decided to try it on the pan which proved to be more of a challenge because of the difference in the layout but I used it as an opportunity to learn the layout of the pan and figure out if there are any patterns with these chords and voicings by @joeyspracticesessions

Its Tuna the week, this week I chose to learn the intro to follow the light by @coryjwong and @dirtyloopsofficial

This intro gave me some trouble for sure, identifying notes and chords were tricky but not impossible but the chopping out of the runs was the most challenging, i think its safe to say that this is the fastest I’ve played a run on a mallet instrument so im taking that win for sure, but thats why its so sloppy

Practicing this part was super difficult because of how hard it is to get into the practice room with any mallet instrument without the room being taken,

I practiced throughout the week, minus Thursday and Friday and recorded this video on Sunday, practices were generally in the hours of before/after rehersals and later in the evening usually in room 116 or as you see in the video, in the middle of the hallway because all the rooms were taken

Overall I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out because I chose this as more of a joke thinking I couldn’t get that ending run but… here we are with a really close outcome by @joeyspracticesessions
