Knowing the environmental impact of most conventional textile dyeing and printing processes, I was keen to find a digital printing studio with sustainability at its heart. After comparing a few, I came across @maakeuk. I was really impressed by their eco credentials! Their entire printing process is built around reducing waste and sourcing more responsible textiles, such as the beautiful Eco Silk Twill I chose. •Every Horse Chestnut Blossom scarf is:🌿 Printed on demand in London🌿 Produced using digital textile printing methods with no water and significantly less energy than traditional methods🌿 Printed with OEKO-TEX®️ and GOTS-approved inks🌿 Made from Eco Silk Twill woven from GRS-certified recycled fibres🌿 Each scarf is made to order (link in bio!)🌿 Each scarf is finished by hand with a traditional rolled hem (by yours truly 😉)•The first edition is limited to 11 scarves, making every piece part of a very small production run.•••📸 @kosta_ivashyn •#ecosilk #silkscarf#botanicaldesign #patterndesigner #madebyhand by @johannebertauxstrenna

Horse Chestnut Blossom Silk Scarf: First Edition 🌿As a Corsican, chestnut trees are very special to me. We often call our sweet chestnut trees « l’arbre à pain » (the « bread tree ») because they have nourished communities for centuries... and they’re a bit of a cultural icon!In London, I discovered horse chestnut trees and became fascinated by their spectacular and delicate candle-like blossoms. I later discovered they’re actually native to the Balkan peninsula and were introduced to Europe in the 16th century, by botanist Carolus Clusius (such a cool name)! So this design brings together two of my worlds beautifully: my native Corsica and my home in London, connected through chestnut trees and the awe I experience being near them.•Each scarf is printed on eco silk and finished with a hand-rolled hem.✨ First edition: limited to 11 pieces✨ Matching scrunchies are also available while fabric stocks lastWa Pre-order link in bio if you’d like to reserve one.•📸 @kosta_ivashyn ✨ @flora_louiseesther 💁🏽‍♀️ @maylamaystyles 💄 @annawellsmakeup + @itspaigespagee •••#ecosilk #silkscarf#botanicaldesign #patterndesigner #madebyhand by @johannebertauxstrenna

It all started with a conversation. A chance encounter at a rooftop gathering... nearly two years ago. What followed was months of following each other’s work, inviting each other out, and never quite finding the time. Then, finally... a new idea.Inspiration sprang from an hour-long conversation. The chance for me to design a new textile print, and for Flora to support my work and bring together a kick-ass photoshoot team. Then came sketches, samples, fabric swatches, many voice notes and texts, and many more tiny decisions...And finally, last weekend, on the summer solstice, we came together, outdoors, to bring it all to life. Seeing something move from a spark, a simple idea in my sketchbook, to an object that can be worn, tied, gifted and treasured... It just never gets old!More soon... 🌿•••📸 @kosta_ivashyn ✨ @flora_louiseesther •••#textiledesigner#silkscarf#madebyhand#slowmade #botanicaldesign by @johannebertauxstrenna

🌿 A little detail from something I’ve been quietly working on...After months of sketching, designing, sampling, sourcing print-on-demand suppliers, testing prints and sewing, my first silk scarf is finally ready!!!One of my favourite parts has been hand-rolling and stitching the edge, a traditional finishing technique that creates this elegant rounded hem. This project has been such a wonderful creative collaboration… I can’t wait to share more of the story behind it! Huge thank you to @kosta_ivashyn and @flora_louiseesther for helping bring it to life 🫶🏼More soon ✨•••#textiledesigner#silkscarf#madebyhand#slowmade #botanicaldesign by @johannebertauxstrenna

Hand-finishing my first silk scarf! A beautiful collaboration with @flora_louiseesther 🌿This might be my favourite part of the whole process. Hand-rolling and hand-stitching the edge takes patience (and practice!!), but so satisfying to see that smooth, rounded edge take shape! That extra touch just makes the piece feel so special and elegant. More photos of the finished scarf coming soon ✨•••#surfacepatterndesigner #slowmadefashion #silkscarfdesign #madebyhand #textiledesign by @johannebertauxstrenna

A recent thrift flip! ✨I absolutely loved the geometric repeat pattern on this boxy nightgown, but the shape just wasn’t for me. Rather than letting it go to waste (or donating it), I transformed it into a handmade lingerie set instead🧵 Details include: 🪡 spaghetti straps and bias in matching fabric🪡 vintage picot lace discovered in my family attic many moons ago (and dating back at least a century!)🪡 French seams to piece everything together nicely 🪡 gathered detail on the cups and in the backA gentle reminder that your best materials are probably already sitting in your cupboard! Need some help transforming pre-loved pieces into something you can actually wear? I’d love to help! •••#thriftflip #memade #upcycledfashion#slowfashion #sewistsofinstagram by @johannebertauxstrenna

Such a joy to look back at past work! Going all the way back to teacher training in 2019, and even further, to 2017... when I first moved to De Beauvoir, and created my very first repeat pattern using ferns from the garden! 🌿In this carousel: 🌿 painting repeat patterns with real ferns 🌿 preparing fabric for shibori dyeing🌿 a giant collaborative piece stitched with Year 9 students at @instaroftheweektca made from their individual handmade pieces 🌿 close-up details of gathered and dyed fabric mixing shibori with hand-drawn botanical illustrations🌿 experimenting with hapa zome, a beautiful Japanese technique using pressure to “hammer” pigments from flowers and leaves directly into fabric It’s always been about plants, pattern, texture and making things by hand, sloooooowllyyyyyy ✨•••#surfacepatterndesign #botanicaltextiles#textileart #slowmaking#natureinspireddesign by @johannebertauxstrenna

Nature is where it all starts ✨No trends, no forecasting… just being present with each season, and quiet enough to notice the beauty that emerges.Nature has always been my happy place. But this year in particular, I seem to have become even more aware of the many flowers and trees around me. Might have something to do with horticulture volunteering through @theroyalparks… or becoming completely surface pattern design obsessed …? 🌿In any case, being able to translate the joy and awe I experience into pattern design feels really special. •••#natureinspired #floral #surfacepatterndesigner#patterndesigner #repeatpattern by @johannebertauxstrenna

Maquis collection 🌿Inspired by (you guessed it!) the Corsican maquis in bloom, at springtime. A few weeks into surface pattern design and Illustrator! Very proud of this progress ✨•••#textiledesign#printdesign#floralprint#patterncollection#botanicaldesign by @johannebertauxstrenna
