Meet Matteui Bastillada, age 18, born in the Philippines but grew up in Key West. Matteui (pronounced Matthew) is a talented musician who plays a dozen instruments but specializes in the saxophone. He earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston where he is a freshman studying music. Matteui hopes to take his musical gifts to a higher level at Berklee and post-college. “My goal is to serve the listener, and spread my love and passion for music while I can,” he said. For more on the music scholar, read on. If music be the food of love, play on. taken in Key West, Florida by @john.carroll8

Fun to look back on stories I wrote for the Livingston Enterprise in 2022. It was the summer of Messi and the World Cup, a historic flood of the Yellowstone River, a heated cornhole tournament at the Legion in the dead of winter, a year of inspiring music at Pine Creek with John Mayer and friends, an era of movie stardom and ballyhoo at the Yellowstone Film Ranch, a season of football and the classic Brawl of the Wild, and a Thanksgiving full of community and gratitude. taken in Livingston, Montana by @john.carroll8

I enjoyed serving on the media panel at the Hometown Candidates Elections Forum Monday evening in Key West at the Tennessee Williams Theatre. The city, community is at an important turning point in its storied history. The Primary Election is Aug. 18. We need great leadership and intelligent, trustworthy public servants in the Keys. Jobs on the ballot include Mayor, City Commissioners, County Commissioner, County Judge, and School Board. Read the Keys Citizen for election coverage, news, analysis, and results. taken in Tennessee Williams Theatre by @john.carroll8

Neil Young’s “The Painter” The painter stood before her work
She looked around everywhere
She saw the pictures and she painted them
She picked the colors from the air
Green to green, red to red
Yellow to yellow in the light
Black to black when the evening comes
Blue to blue in the night
It’s a long road behind me
It’s a long road ahead
If you follow every dream
You might get lost
If you follow every dream
You might get lost
She toed the line, she held her end up
She did the work of two men
But in the end she fell down
Before she got up again
I keep my friends eternally
We leave our tracks in the sound
Some of them are with me now
Some of them can’t be found
It’s a long road behind me
And I miss you now
If you follow every dream
You might get lost
If you follow every dream
You might get lost
Green to green, red to red
Yellow to yellow in the light
Black to black when the evening comes
Blue to blue through the night by @john.carroll8
