Wow am I late to post about AAPI heritage month lol I just wanted to take the time to post a lil something about growing up in predominantly white community as an Asian American adoptee and how that shaped a lot of how I view myself and my culture. Growing up as crazy as it sounds I never really perceived myself differently than my family obviously I knew I was Chinese but the thought that people perceive me differently than they perceived my parents and my younger white siblings did not even cross my mind. Living in such a tightly knit community it gets to a point where nobody even talks about the fact that you were adopted or that you are a different ethnicity than your parents because it’s just known information and because we never talked about it I quite frankly had little interest in learning about my own culture aside from consuming media with Asian characters because it was not something that was even spoken of in my day-to-dayit’s only after I graduated from high school that I started to cosplay more and interact with other Asian individuals that made me realize how much I did wanna learn about my heritage and culture but didn’t know where to start.
