Watch the pivot through impact — stay tall and gain height from a long trail leg.

As the trail knee collapses, the right side follows — the hip, then the trail shoulder — and before you know it, the club is being buried into the turf.

Stay tall through impact by maintaining an extended trail leg throughout the swing.

Long trail leg = better pivot, better posture and a cleaner strike. by @john.wrightgolf

Things look a little awkward here in Set 1, with me standing too far away from the ball. This encourages the club to work around me, creating a much flatter swing plane.

In Shot 2, I’m standing too close to the ball, which causes the club to work more vertically and creates a much steeper swing plane.

So what do I mean by this?

Look at the shaft pitch in the backswing. In Set 1, the shaft is sitting at around 20deg creating a very flat plane. In Shot 2, the shaft is much more vertical, around 80deg, creating a much steeper plane.

The third shot shows a more neutral setup and backswing, with the shaft pitch around 60deg. For this particular shot, out of thick rough, that’s the type of pitch I’m looking for.

Small changes in how you set up to the ball can have a significant effect on how the club moves throughout the swing. by @john.wrightgolf

A great illustration of how setup influences movement patterns and the compensations we make throughout the swing. In particular, look at the distance from the ball. What do you notice? by @john.wrightgolf

Swinging the club on-plane is a requirement to be a consistent ball striker.

A simple process in obtaining the correct ball position for your mid irons.

I like the 6,7,8 and 9iron to be aligned forward of centre in the stance which allows for the correct low point on a standard flight shot.

If lm looking for a higher flighted shot l will move slightly further forward again, and if lm looking for a lower shot, l will move back towards the centre of my stance.

This simple drill helps you obtain the correct ball position each time you grab your mid irons. by @john.wrightgolf
