More reflection, 1974. After many black&white watercolor and oils, my first diner and watercolor in in color. “Alice and the Hat”, 85 x 11”. Alice and Tom Carey owned the classic mid-30s Worcester Lunch car. Tom was a sports writer for the “Worcester Telegram and Gazette” . He was known as “The Hat”. Scroll last photo, Tom on left. Thanks @gutmanrichard [for b/w photo. The diner still exists, not operating, all dressed in brick for another enterprise. Tragic.

VINCENTOWN DINER 1974, , watercolor on paper, 8.5 x 13”. Vincentown, NJ. After many b/w watercolors and paintings, my first foray into color with watercolor. The ca.1951’Mountainview diner was resting gracefully in the backyard sunset, having seen thriving days. The owner replaced it the “Vincentown Diner Restaurant”, leaving the early incarnation for memories; more glorious progress ahead.

PULLMAN., 1974, oil on canvas, 60 x 72”. Reflecting. I met Dick Gutman @gutmanrichard in 1973. From NYC. To Cambridge, MA where he and Kellie were then. On to our first dinner hunt sojourn, first stop Arlington, MA. A pristine classic ca.1941 Worcester streamliner welcomed us. Pure glee. On a return trip in ‘75 needing another meet ‘n eat, gone! A cardboard cut out bank in its place. Sorrow!

John Baeder, Untitled, London, U.K., 1969

@john_baeder is widely acknowledged as one of the foremost painters of the Photorealist school. His seminal work, represented in collections worldwide, focuses on diners and American roadside attractions, and reminds us of their place in our collective consciousness.

His early black and white photographs, taken between 1962 and 1969, before he burst onto the New York art scene with a solo exhibit of paintings at legendary Ivan Karp’s OK Harris Gallery, are less known.

Remaining for many years in Baeder’s personal archives, Susan Edwards, former Executive Director of the Frist Art Museum, wrote of these images:

“For decades he regarded his own photographs as source material. Inevitably, Baeder’s photographs are being reconsidered and recognized for their stand alone power in the artist’s oeuvre.”
