Day 5-26, Ontario, Canada, Great Mountain Lake, Carlilly Island. The cabins were built in 1929 and obviously made to last…at 46 degrees N otherwise known as The Great White North it’s hard to imagine how they did it. The logs came from the surrounding forest but everything had to be hauled in over the snow and ice during the winter. There are 5 original cabins plus the wood fired sauna down by the dock. The sauna was gifted to the island in the 90’s by the Puska-Wiita family when their nearby camp was taken by the government and returned to the land. Three of the original cabins are pictured here. The main cabin is huge with an adjacent kitchen, and now boasts electric lights, propane refrigerator, hot and cold running water. The Island itself is 14 acres. by @john_macharg

Day 26, Lake Pinache, Ontario, Canada. Exiting Great Mountain Lake, Killarney Provincial Park after 21 days in the wilderness. My grandfather and grandmother, Carlyle and Lilly MacHarg, bought an Island on Great Mountain Lake circa 1930 and put five cabins on it with no expense spared. The lake became imbedded at the back of the large provincial park guaranteeing it will always remain a prestine wilderness experience. Although a few have entered by SUP this was the first exit on the stand up. It’s a 6 mile hike over 3 lakes to reach the island. A water taxi on Pinache takes us out and returns us to the marina and civilization. by @john_macharg

Day28, Outside of Montréal, 15 minute city in the second largest country in the world with a total population of 41M. Look around and you will see them everywhere…USA, Europe, Canada, etc. Developers and corporations love it…maximum density/minimum land = our money in their pockets. We get the shaft and they get the mine. by @john_macharg

Day 45, Atlantic Surf Park, Virginia Beach, NC - They have very nice locker rooms…a van lifers dream park. I mostly used this locker at the park. Anyways, that’s my stuff except for the hat. When I opened the locker that day someone had left it behind. The tag on it reads Lunada Bay😳. It’s a very special place for me, where I grew up and learned to surf…like a sign post that you’re on a good path. Let me know if you see this and want your hat back. by @john_macharg

Day 50, Atlantic Surf Park - Mark Michetti @markmichetti spent a week with me at the park. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any selfies of us together. Instagram has taught me that I too often neglect to take pictures of the people I see and meet, which is the best part, and especially for an audience. by @john_macharg

Day 52 - awesome photo…credit Craig. Naval Air Station Oceana is less than one mile from the park in Virginia Beach. The Blue angels were putting on a show and you can see them in the distance. The jets are a fixture of Virginia Beach. Everyday they are usually right overhead and loud. I can’t remember the women’s name, but she was a real charmer 😁 by @john_macharg
