OVER THE GARDEN WALL,YORKSHIRE 2017
The view from our back garden looking towards Coal Pit Lane and Shepley beyond. A swift study, I was amazed at the way it stood up against more ‘finished’ works at a show of my landscape stuff which I had last year. It was the first to get the red spot at the opening?

WILD PRIVET

THE ‘GRIM UP NORTH?’ SHOW
Lauren and Me making the Yorkshire Post at my exhibition last year. With the fiscal support of the NHS with whom the school closely worked, we architecturally converted a huge weaving shed into the The Everybody Gallery in 2010.
We have hosted many great solo shows here including those of Quentin Blake and Ralph Steadman.

THE GREAT STILL
I painted this when I was the visiting artist at Skibo Castle, right in the top right corner of Scotland.
It was the home of steel magnate turned philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, following his return from the U.S. the richest man in the world. A glorious gig lasting 9 years from 2015 to 2024 when the castle was the home of the Carnegie Club of Great Britain.

The painting depicts the Dornoch Loch one very still August evening, and is very probably the stillest painting I have ever finished.
Foot Note: I once taught anatomical illustration in the mordant anatomy dept at Leeds University. I have to tell you that Nothing I drew or painted in that time could match the above Scottish work for its depth of Deepest Still.

MODERN ART IN THE STONEAGE
After visiting the Caves of Altamira 15 years ago, I turned into a cave painter, Yorkshire’s favourite cave painter in fact! It was a phase that did’nt last long but it did leave me with a strange Neolithic smell and view of the modern world? by @john_ross_art

LITTLE POO-TIN SURVEYS HIS EMPIRE.
This is a big drawing going back to a pen & bile style of my younger days. It dates back 5 years to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. I love the sound of deep hatred scratching and hatching and spitting on the surface of old fashioned illustration board.

THE MARTYRDOM OF LITTLE POOTIN BY ELECTROCUTION WITH VULTURES
This drawing dates from Putin’s invasion of The Ukraine. My boiling hatred of the man inspired a whole set of cartoons called The Childhood of Little Pootin, which I posted out on Instagram. Very quickly all those Russians who followed my stuff were quickly no longer following. Their final warning comments to me were identical and according to my Russian pals were written by the FSB sons of the KGB. The dip pen is mightier than Stalin’s Organ Pipes as some might put it?

THE DAWN OF THE AGE OF PIKE
A Killer from the Egg as the great poet wrote up this saturnine beast of river, canal and pond. As a youth I would take myself to Leicester Museum and Art Gallery. The museum had wonderful basement aquaria gallery next to the Ancient Egyptian collection. Often on my own down there, I found the absolute still of the live Pike behind glass more bowel moving than the 6000 year stillness of the long dead mummies.
