The 1980s in Los Angeles was such an innovative time for roots music. Bands like The Blasters, Rank and File, X, Lucinda Williams, Jim Lauderdale, Lone Justice, The Beat Farmers and more were blending punk rock with country music and classic songwriting while doing it on their terms. Venues like The Palomino Club in North Hollywood were a breeding ground for a new sound we know as Cowpunk - born of the rebel spirit of young artists who embraced country music in their own way.

Had a chance to meet and chat a bit with the one and only John Doe at an intimate and amazing house concert put on by friend @jacarandajohn last week. I tried not to be like Chris Farley with Paul McCartney. We talked boots, El Paso, The Replacements, a little politics, Long Beach defunct clubs, why he’s not been invited to play AmericanaFest, his early solo band with Jon Dee Graham and Robert Lloyd. Mr. Doe played a 75-minute set of X songs, solo songs including a batch from his excellent new Fables in a Foreign Land and covers including a sweet crooning of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and a take on “Poor Little Girl” that gave that song a whole new depth. His is an unmistakable writer and voice. Very inspirational. A memorable night.
