I met @marisarebecca who is my wife at an art school that used to exist. I was in a class where i had to learn how to write about my work for the first time. I’ve always known what i wanted to say visually but i was never a big words guy.

My professor read my first paper and told me to seek immediate help with a girl named Marisa at the library’s tutor program lol.

I had met her before when she was bound and gagged for a photo a friend of mine was taking in my studio. So I was more than happy to have a reason to text her and see if she could help me.

I think it was the universe telling me she was the part of my brain i didn’t know i was missing.

It’s been almost 20 years since then and I’m still endlessly amazed by her and her ability to adapt but still be true to herself and her vision.

This was supposed to be a post about her birthday so here are some photos we took in Colorado last week. by @johnawad

My mom brought so much light into my life. Manerva loved living. She was so vibrant. She loved bright colors, she was always so excited to see a beautiful sunset and even more excited to see a rainbow.

My father, sister, and I were the loud ones of the family. My mother more reserved, but if she loved you, she loved you louder than anyone.

She loved providing for her loved ones. If anyone needed anything, she as always the first one to jump in and help. She loved nothing more than cooking a huge meal for all of us. After she got sick, she had trouble cooking, she passed the reigns over to me. She taught me everything I know about cooking and she was always so happy to guide me in a way that was supportive and allowed me to learn and thrive under her.

Sunday afternoon, the doctors took us into a conference room to tell us that she wasn’t going to make it. They asked us to tell them stories about my mom, to tell them about her life. In the middle of that conversation my sister jumped out of her chair and pointed out the most incredible double rainbow right outside the window. We instantly knew that was my mother saying goodbye to us. We ran back to her room and looked outside and the rainbow was ending directly outside her window. Mary, Marisa, and I held her and she passed away in our arms. I’ll love you forever mom. by @johnawad

It’s my dads birthday today. He passed away in December. He was my best friend, and I’ve been struggling more than i thought i would. But I’ve always believed you can’t appreciate the good times without bad ones.

He always had such a thick Arab accent. Whenever we would go to a doctors appointment they would ask his date of birth and he would usually say in the heaviest accent “six eighteen ninety five”. He was born in 1935 lol. But they would never understand him and would always look at me panicked. He would look over at me and give me his sly smile while i had to try to convince the staff he was just messing with them and not having a medical emergency.

I knew i got my sense of humor from him but now that he’s gone, I’m able to see all the other traits i got from him too.

I found a newspaper article about him because he was the personal veterinarian to the president of Egypt. He had a quote in there that really resonated with me. “When you are friends, you are friends for life.”

I just wanted to thank all of my friends that have been there for me. Love you all. by @johnawad
