This crabeater seal shot is one of my favourites from our Antarctica trip. It looks as though it’s scratching an itchy nose! Despite their name they don’t in fact eat crabs, preferring krill. This chinstrap penguin posed nicely for me which is unusual as they nest among rocks mainly. Who wouldn’t love them with their smart tuxedos? They are among the world’s most abundant penguins, are remarkably agile and can be surprisingly aggressive. They also tend to be very vocal. They are bold, curious, rather comical and will sometimes march right up to people before inspecting them and wandering off. #chinstrap #penguins🐧 #antarctica #best_bird_shots #bird_freaks by @johnbishop67

I was pleased to win the Best of the Best digital competition at Frome Wessex photographic with this image of a gentoo mother and chicks. At 73 am I too old to be a first time author? Swipe left to see a poem. Penguin Hip-Hop and other Poems is based on photographs I took in the Antarctic. I wrote it for my granddaughter and it will suit children aged 5 to 14 – but adults enjoy it too! Profits will go to the Global Penguin Society who do such good work. I hope that the talking penguins will help children to love the wildlife and make them aware of the need to protect this fabulous but fragile environment. So why does one penguin chooses the “pedestal” while the other stays on the sand? 🐧In the world of king penguins, sometimes it’s just about a better vantage point—or perhaps just keeping your feet a little drier! I caught this pair in a moment of quiet standoff, with the elephant seal in the background providing some heavy-duty scale to the scene.Moments like these are what inspired me to try to tell my five-year-old granddaughter about Antarctic wildlife. This photograph and others led to my book “Penguin Hip-Hop and Other Poems.” While the title is playful, the heart of the book is about observing these incredible creatures and their unique habits.
