We only get so many summers in life and we don’t actually know how many we will get, reflecting on this has helped me realize just how precious and wonderful this time of year is. As the season ends and I think about dancing outside, my feet on the hot sand, riding my bike by Lake Ontario, sharing food with my nearest and dearest, growing closer with my man Dilpreet, movie nights, setting up my new home, and feeling a sense of landing in my career and my role here at McMaster University at the Wilson College of Leadership and Civic Engagement. Clip clop! I am feeling the year of the horse which signifies significant momentum and change. Looking back at this past spring my life looks so different despite some real against all odds circumstances. I decided to try to buy a home on my own. My offer on a house in Hamilton was accepted on my son’s 10th birthday. After 30 years of living in Toronto, I moved back to my hometown, a city I desperately wanted to leave as a teen, but now I’ve changed and the city has changed, and I’m thrilled to be back to my roots and closer to my son and my family. Big thanks to my aunt Annette Ward @annetteward5153 who was my real estate agent, highly recommend working with her if anyone is looking, and to my other warrior women, my Mom, and Aunt Margaret who were incredibly helpful in finding the right home. Right after moving I accepted a new permanent position at McMaster University as the Experiential Education Coordinator in the Wilson College of Leadership and Civic Engagement. I’ve just resigned from George Brown after teaching there for 9.5 years, it has been a bittersweet and tender departure. So I’m riding the waves of change and am profoundly grateful that I’ve sorted out stable housing and employment. After a hard stretch with lots of loss, it’s so exciting to have a streak like this. Celebrating a special birthday today…I’ve been a parent to this wonderful child for 10 years. Although you see the milestone approaching, there’s something about your kid reaching double digits that is mind blowing. If you know Ollie, you know his passion for swimming, dinosaurs, and video games, his hilarious sense of humour, his big blond hair, and sweet heart. I am such a proud papa! ❤️🎉 by @johncaffery

This week marked the 77th annual International Human Rights Day, and 77th anniversary of Nakba. To mark the occasion, the Community Worker program at George Brown College held a Human Rights Day Panel. Im grateful I have been given the role of lead organizer for a series of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the program and this was the launch. This was an opportunity to explore the promise and the problem with our Human Rights. I was thrilled listening to the courageous critiques, and the stories of solidarity were a tonic for the soul. Many of the ideas and statements shared were electrifying and felt like a serum of truth.

I truly love the Community Worker program that I am alumni of, and faculty, and the event was a perfect embodiment of why. So many attended despite the snowy weather and the room was buzzing with people connecting. The panelists Desmond Cole, Diana Gallego, Diana Chan McNally, Samira Mohyeddin, Brianna Olson Pitawanakwat, and moderator Resh Budhu had a deeply profound conversation that felt nuanced, brave, caring, and necessary.

I’ve been chewing on lots of ideas since that night and reflecting on how we can embrace a responsibility based friendship, a framework from the Anishinaabekwe people that puts the onus on us to look out for each other. Amidst ever-increasing individualism and greed, recognizing our responsibility to each other seems essential to our survival. #humanrights #communityworker taken in George Brown Polytechnic by @johncaffery
