I’m proud to have joined so many great state and local partners to celebrate the opening of Hidden Falls at the Brandywine Zoo.

This zoo has always held a special place in my heart. I would bring my sons here when they were younger, and I know Hidden Falls will help create those same lasting memories for families across our city. It’s a wonderful addition to Wilmington, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it. by @johncarneyde

Mayor John Carney announced on Tuesday that the City of Wilmington’s Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I), in partnership with the First State Community Action Agency (FSCAA), has launched a Rent Escrow Program to protect tenants living in unsafe housing conditions.

Through the new program, eligible renters will be permitted to withhold rent when a landlord fails to provide hot water, heat, or electricity after proper notification.

The Rent Escrow Program is now available to residents. Renters can visit the Rent Escrow Program webpage to learn more.

One of the most rewarding parts of this experience was getting to know Christian Gonzalez, our Sanitation manager and hearing about the dedication that goes into this role every day. Behind every collection route are hardworking City employees who take great pride in serving our residents. Spending time with this team gave me an even greater appreciation for the work they do to keep Wilmington clean, safe, and moving forward. As we continued our ride, I learned just how much coordination goes into every collection route. Our Sanitation team relies on careful planning, teamwork, our staff’s safety and wellness, and technology, including an app that helps monitor and manage routes, to provide reliable service for our residents. It was fascinating to see how these tools help our crews work safely and efficiently while serving neighborhoods across Wilmington.

I had the opportunity to spend the day riding along with one of our Sanitation managers to get a firsthand look at the important work our crews do every day. Keeping Wilmington clean takes planning, teamwork, timing, and a lot of hard work behind the scenes. I’m excited to share this experience with you and give you a closer look at the people and operations that help keep our city running.

As a reminder, the normal sanitation schedule is as follows (subject to change for extreme weather and holidays):

Monday: East of I-95 trash collection
Tuesday: West of I-95 trash collection
Wednesday: No Collection
Thursday: East of I-95 recyclable collection

What a memorable evening! Rumble in Rodney brought people together from across our city for a night of exciting competition and celebration.

It was great to cheer on these talented athletes, while spending time with residents and see the Chase Fieldhouse filled with so much positive energy. Thank you to everyone who organized this event and everyone who came out to make it such a special night.

City and State investigations continue into the fatal officer-involved shooting that claimed the life of a 19-year-old Wilmington resident, Kadir Skinner. I want to express my deepest condolences to the young man’s family, friends and loved ones. No matter the circumstances, the loss of a young life is a tragedy, and our hearts are with everyone who is grieving.

When the investigative process allows, additional information will be released consistent with the law and with the interests of justice. Until then, we ask for understanding as we fulfill our legal obligations.

Small businesses are essential for creating jobs, strengthening our economy, and building community vibrancy. Thank you to M&T Bank and the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce for partnering to support local small business owners through the Delaware Business Accelerator Program.

On Wednesday evening, participants pitched their business plans to a panel of guest judges for a chance to secure funding and further scale their impact. The entrepreneurial spirit requires creativity, vision, persuasiveness, and resolve. Each of the participants should be proud of the work they're doing to contribute to their communities. by @johncarneyde

Renovations are ongoing at Canby Park and Herman Holloway Park! With our Parks and Recreation Department, I had the chance to see the progress firsthand. These investments are about creating safer, more welcoming spaces where families can gather and where neighbors can connect. I’m excited to see these improvements take shape and look forward to opening these renewed parks for our community to enjoy. by @johncarneyde
